Temp readings on a 98 AWD

Post by ds99 »

Hi guys,
The Watermelon seems to be running colder than usual. I know we have a cold snap going on in the Ohio valley but the heater never gets hot and my temp gauge is hovering right above 100. I am full on coolant and it is mixed properly.
I'm leaning toward a faulty T-Stat since in the summer this year it ran above 200-210 during 95 plus days.
What should I be at if ambient temp is around 22-36 degrees? What are you guys hitting.
Thanks in advance for your input.

My 98 would show in the 165 to 175 range pretty much all the time. It reads low though as I have confirmed the ECM saw 195 which is what the t-stat was. With the heater blower on high I could see the temp gauge drop to the 130 - 150 range if the engine was idling. 100 is definitely low and I too would suspect the t-stat.

Do you have an OBDII scanner hooked to a computer. It will tell the temperature.

When we had 15 degree weather here, my Safari was running at 190.

Sounds like a bad Tstat.

Update.
Well I got off work and saw the sun peeking at me on the drive home and thought to myself. No wind, 25 degrees out and another big storm developing on Monday. So I decided now would be the time to put in the t-stat I bought on thursday. After the required cussing, and banged knuckles in freezing temps, lost clamps landing on the front diff housing(requiring me to crawl on the snow/ice slush covering my driveway) I got it done!
Now the heater is blasting and my temp reads at a steady 180 in a 25 degree day.
Thanks again for all the help.
Phil

Cobra, how did it go?
I hope you have a garage to work in. I thought I would be outside working on mine for about 30 minutes and it turns out I was there for an hour and a half. Time flies when your cold and miserable and concentrating on the job. I think I just thawed out yesterday :)
I know it has to be much colder where your at.
