Grand National Turbo 6

Post by blk lt awd »

Question for all the engine guru's. i found a complete buick regal t-type but the body turned out to be too far gone for it to be worth while to restore. now debating if i should buy a clean regal and turn two cars into one.

however, another thought crossed my mind......putting the turbo motor into the van. now the question is how hard/plausible would it be to put the motor into the astro. it's an 84 model year and i can take everything out of the car. i believe the tranny is different and obviously the engine is carb'd. to get the motor fuel injected and to use the 4l60e.....possible? i understand the factory motor the way it sits is good for up to 400 horses. the motor will need to be rebuilt as well as it's seized.....

Other than the mounting of the turbo, I don't see a problem. The turbo'd have to go under the truck, most prolly. That's what another member did with his turbo'ed 4.3.
I dunno that I see the practicality of it, you could prolly build up a Vortec v-8 up to 400 hp cheaper and maybe more reliably as well. But who am I to judge? :smurf:

I agree, it is possiable but imo you would be better off buying a clean Buick body rebuilding the T-type motor and putting it in the Buick. Then selling said Buick as a GN clone useing money to turbo a 4.3 and droping it in your van a la Typhone style!! Least thats what I'd do. =)

1984 model should be SFI not carb. The harness isn't bad to convert over to the SFI stuff, I would recommend converting to the 86-87 style ECU as well. They aren't as good as the 86-87 performance wise, but compared to a TBI motor (except the HO) you'll be about 50hp up stock for stock. Add a few more mods and you'll easily be exceeding a stock 350 TBI power wise. The big concern to me is the placement of the turbocharger on the hot air cars, if I remember correctly it's towards the top and may be an issue with the dog house; I'd definitely want to wrap the down pipe and get a blanket for the turbine of the turbocharger.

thanks for all the input guys. you are right mr. roboto.....it is sfi. not carb. my bad, and yes the turbo is on top of the motor.......

after much debate and thinking......not worth it. i'll be better off sticking to my original plan of going with the ramjet 350. i'm just gonna take the car back to my friend.

the car itself is too far gone to be worth restoring. i'd have to take two cars to make one. even then it's gonna be a lot of work as the engine is seized and although the interior is complete it all needs to be re done......all of it. even the dash has cracks in it. was hoping to be at least ahead with a clean body. I can probably buy a full out running and decent shape grand national for less than what this t type would run me to fix.........unfortunate as it's all original....

i'm hearing that song........can't quite recall who sings it........and i just know the two lines.....maybe some of you old timers can help me out.... :poke:

If the engine weren't seized I would rather have the GN motor personally. Bit more work up front but a lot more potential with the stock long block. If it were an intercooled (86-87) motor I'd build it before I did a 350. On the plus side that car has a LOT of good stuff should your friend decide to part it that is worth some bank. The trans they came with is one of the better 200R4s out there, and the rear end is an 8.5 inch versus the 7.5 most "G" cars came with. It also should have 3.42 gears stock as well. The turbo will be a 60 trim T3, but it's set up for the funky intake tbh. If he was closer and the motor ran I'd buy it and throw it in my van tbh.
