Gear prices
ok what's the deal, why are yukons 4.1's twice the price of their 3.7's and why do most companies not even make 3.7's for the front....?

Randys r&p prices are about the same on the rear gears. For the front, the 4.11's actually are much cheaper than the 3.73's. Where you getting your prices, work?Cobra wrote:ok what's the deal, why are yukons 4.1's twice the price of their 3.7's and why do most companys not even make 3.7's for the front....?

Re: Gear prices
just roaming around the net and the 3.73 are all more the the 4.10 or 4.11 why...? i don't think i need to go as low as 4.10 since i intend to put a V8 in and i don't want to lose that much top-end speed

Re: Gear prices
Ok gotcha, thought you were saying 4.11's were twice the price!
Try looking for some used GM 3.73,they were fairly common. In our vans and s10's.
I picked up a 4.11 rear r&p with a g80 on ebay for a pretty good deal.
I shopped around quite a bit over a period of a few months, ended up buying from several different sellers. But I did end up with some good bargains.

Re: Gear prices
I don't know the difference between a series 2 or 3 carrier either!
Our rear diffs. are 7.625 or 7.5 I believe. I know mines a 7.625. Our front diffs are 7.2 or 7.25 same thing just depends who's listing them. I never did find any used gears for my front diff ,got a new set.

Re: Gear prices
i think i figured out the diff carrier series
I believe series 3 is for 3.23-4.11 and series 2 is for2.73- 3.08 (please for god sake correct me if i'm wrong)
if that's right i already have a series 3 in my truck so all these gear that say MUST BE USE WITH SERIES 3 CARRIER will fit no problem as means that the new diff i want will fit since it's also a series 3 (in theory)
i just email someone who lists it for a bit over $500 to confirm the have it and that it is indeed a 7.6" 28 spline the description they have on there site is horrible (or should i say none existant)
oh boy now i'm really excided
wish i knew how to install this thing myself would save me so much money, my mechanic is going to freak out if i bring him all these parts......

Re: Gear prices
That's what I was wondering, hope its more than just the rear r&p! Maybe he found a locker too! I think I got about $500 in parts front & back with the G80. That's also including the bearing & shim install kits.LiftedAWDAstro wrote:What are you getting for the $500?

Re: Gear prices
i'm torn the 4.1's are cheaper but i think they will be over kill since i have no intention of larget tires, i do however intend to tow but it'll mainly be city driving and a little highway on weekends. I also intend to put a V8 in either when my engine kicks the bucket (probably won't happen) or when i happen to find the donor vehicle for cheaper then i can pass up
so what do you think go with teh 4.1's or hunt down the 3.73's

Re: Gear prices
I'm thinking 3.73 for myself, as I know I don't have the ability or tools needed to switch out the gears myself, but I could purchase a whole rear axle of about the same mileage and swap that myself, at least I think so. The 3.73s are common enough in full rear end assemblies at the wreckers, although they are pretty expensive from what I have seen. I might even be able to find one with a g80. What are you thinking/planning on towing with it. I guess that is the question. My pop-up at under 2000Lbs GVW is not going to need the 3.73s, even though they would be nice. If you are going to a larger trailer, or heavier loads being towed, base your choice on what you are planning on towing. I am inferring from what you said you are looking at heavier loads, so I would go 4.10s. If I purchased the larger trailer I keep considering, I would probably go the 4.10 route.

Re: Gear prices
hmmm what i'd be towing in order of weight would be Cobra Spec Tramper, car trailer with Toyota MR2 (i intend to build a race car sortta ) and at least once and old thunder bird (my grandfathers car) on the car trailer
those are the only things i can think of that i know i'd tow

Re: Gear prices
If you are towing loads like that, you will most certainly appreciate the 4.10s.
