Strange-Speedo issue
Strange-Speedo issue
My 1985 Ole Yellar Astro van's speedo just stop working suddenly.Far as I know it is a cable drive. No bounce or noise from the cable. Then it started working again.Hum???.Guess it really doesn't matter because I have a 1991 pick-up truck tranny that needs a rebuild once I finally get around to the V8 swap, but I am curious as to why this would happen. :-k

curious; have you checked at the rear of the transmission my 95 awd did the same speedo stop working and then would not go past first gear. Let me now what you find.

Re: Strange-Speedo issue
Hey Gary, I've had this happen on other Cheby products and I have found that the cable was broken behind the gauge. I guess it would grab what ever was there every once in a while and it would work for a bit.
Sometimes it would work, but only read half the speed that you were going. No bouncing or anything like that. The two broken ends would just grab each other and it would start to read the speed every once in a while.

Re: Strange-Speedo issue
One of my older Chevys used to do this, it ended up being the speedo gear in the side of the trans. Not the drive gear n the output shaft, but the driven gear at the end of the cable. One or two teeth were broken off of the gear. Just something else to check.

Thanks all for the replies.Really.But this post was on 10/09.Since then the speedo seems to be working ok.I am going with a different tranny for the V8 swap and a whole bunch of other mods that will effect this current speedo. In fact at last I think I will have the LT road worthy enough next wk for the Ole Yellar project van to be coming off the road for all the changes needed.<body work, body mods, lift,Ford rear end swap,V8 mods,V8 swap, tranny mods, interior mods.>
So would you all cross your fingers for a good wk for me so now after two yrs,I can finally start my project. [-o<
