Might be looking for an electrical short

Post by ihatemybike »

Got in Grumpy this morning to try to go to work and had no electricity. Thought somehow the new battery was dead and got ready to jump the van. Was about to move my wife's Jeep into position when I heard Grumpy's key in / open door chime kick in. Walked over, turned the key and it fired right up. Now ready to go to work, I put Grumpy in gear rolled about 10ft so Grumpy was just barely sticking out in the street and the engine dies. Same no electricity situation. Ended up waking my wife so she could drive her Jeep to pull Grumpy back in the drive. Tried to start again, no elec. Came inside to call into work and let the sun come up. Hour and a half later I go out and Grumpy starts right up. Anyone know of a short that would kill all power intermittently?

A bad ground will cause all sorts of problems. Check your "big three" battery conections.

There is a connection behind the batt that the pos cable connects to. If this nut is not tightened down on the stud then you can have a condition in which you have no power to anything, give that a check... its fast and easy to do.

Try as I might I couldn't recreate this morning's problem when I went back out. Van would start right up. I wiggled as many wires as I could, but nothing would kill the engine. I ended up cleaning every ground I could unbolt and shooting the rest with the Blaster to hopefully take care of at a later date.

Thanks Rob, but Grumpy's prob seems to be different. The van had no electrical power to anything. It was like the battery was disconnected. Been driving it around since yesterday and haven't had any problems, but it's making me look forward to Green's trans rebuild in the next couple weeks.
