Good morning Mark,

Thank you for your interest in our Detroit Speed & Engineering products. We do offer a DSE 600 steering gearbox upgrade used to replace the common GM 800 series power steering gear used up by GM until 1992. If you have a GM 800 series gear box the DSE 600 gear box will work. It has a quicker 12.7:1 ratio and have a rack and pinion type valve inside the gear box.

If you have any other questions or concerns please let me know.

Thanks.

That's cool, thanks for posting. I wonder if the DSE 600 is the same as the one the GT, RS, and included in the handling package.

My 1985 MCSS has a 12:1 box and it is tight compared to the one in my 1981 Monte. Has a sporty feel.

Wonder if this box will work in an AWD? I was thinking that they used a different box.

Eh, no. Unless you are building a competitive race van.

If you just want a 12:1 steering gear get the 1989 FE3 (FE2 in later years) A-1 CARDONE Part # 277586 $157 after core return from http://www.rockauto.com.

The mounting bolt pattern is different. A Cardone rep told me that according to the specs for the 12:1 gears they should fit in a AWD box, but they do not build them that way.

No offense but Rock auto needs to do an upgrade on there site- I tried unsuccessfully 3 times to look up that part number and another part for a ford and it just sat there thinking (so to speak and after 10 minutes there site went down each time.

Doesn't offend me any. Site works perfect for me at home and work.

If you would like I can email you a link to a RockAuto shopping cart with the gear. Any parts store should be able to find you the FE3 gear though.

Here it is on AdvanceAuto's website.

DOES ANYBODY KNOW, for the record, if the 2WD 1985-1994 Astro has either the Series 600 or 800 box?

I was considering a Classic Performance Products steering box which fits 67-74 Camaro/Nova and 64-72 Chevelle, but nobody yet has been able to confirm it fits our 1st-gen 2WD vans.

Why spend that kind of money?

FE2 = 12:1, Non-FE2 = 16/19:1
Either can be had for less than $200
