theftloc? what do I need to know.. ?

Post by crash »

hey guys... I'm going to be pulling out my stock cassette deck and cd player (that sits in the cubby hole) on my 99

what do I need to know about removing/installing another GM factory cd player unit?

I'm going to install the factory cd player unit from my sons 97 cavalier (that I removed a couple of months ago) in the van... wiring is the same.. but ..

anything special i need to do so I don't lock out either of the head units and make them fancy looking bricks?

thanks!
Rob

As long as you haven't locked either one, there will be no problem. The issue comes when you put a code in the radio and then pull the power to the unit. It will not allow the radio/unit to power up until you re-enter the lock code. Some of the theft-loc radios (mostly the earlier ones ) had a flashing LED when the ignition was off. If the radio has a lock code, the LED will flash when the key is off. If there is no lock code programmed, then the LED will NOT flash when the key is off. Obviously this only happens with the radios equipped with an LED... (might want to check out the owner's manual for the vehicles, if you have access). If the radio does become inop, there are sites on flea-bay that sell the codes, and of course, there is always the dealer, for a price. Check around, most of the better auto repair radio places will reset the code for you too, for a lesser price than the dealer, anyway.

Good Luck
