odd delay then light clunk?
I noticed it three times today when I made the hour long trip to my mom's place.
going around a corner i slowed, started the turn letting the van roll around it, then as i pressed on the gas pedal there was a slight split second delay then a clunk then away it went.
sound like u joints? or a tranny issue?
it did it a couple more times when slowing, then coasting, then pressing on the gas to go.
these were all at slow speeds. when coasting on the hwy.. then pressing the gas it wasn't noticable.
thanks

It sounds like u-joints to me as well at least that is what I would check first.

Re: odd delay then light clunk?
Other than U-joints, which is a good idea, I'd check the that the fluid is full, and that the driveshaft isn't binding in the tailshaft due to a worn bushing of the splines getting dry. I have had both of the latter cause a weird clunk or delay, almost like it slipped for a split second.crash wrote:I noticed it three times today when I made the hour long trip to my mom's place.

Re: odd delay then light clunk?
check your front brake calipers as well. One of my jeeps did exactly that due to a sticking caliper.
'89 Astro, 4.3L, TBI. Minor intake and exhaust mods. Rebuilt 700R4 trans (by me). Corvette servo, 0.5" boost valve, police grade 1-2 accumulator spring (shifts fast and solid). B&M stacked plate trans cooler. Bilstein shocks. Belltech sway bars front and back. New head unit, speakers and subwoofer. Needs paint and a new headliner.

Re: odd delay then light clunk?
not AWD
and I'll check the trans fluid this am when I get into work
and the clunk really felt more in the rear than the front.. (only have calipers on front)
yesterday, drove around about 40min. didn't do it at all :-k
one thing i've heard mentioned before is something about a sticking solenoid or valve in the trans.. i hope it does it again so i can tell if it's a random clunk or if it did it while shifting from first to second. i don't remember

Re: odd delay then light clunk?
tranny fluid is clean and full
another thing I noticed twice while backing into my spot at work. going from D to R there is a second or two delay before engaging into R. that'd be the ujoints... correct?
another way to check for sure would be to slide under the van and try and rotate the drive shaft by hand and see if any play ? :-k

Re: odd delay then light clunk?
If it was damp out, you could simply have brake dust buildup in the drums. I have had rear drum brakes grab and release when you take off.
A second or 2 delay between R and D wouldn't be u-joints.
Is this the 99 or 93? The 99's trans is built in with a delay between R and D or it could be time for a fresh filter and fluid in the trans.

Re: odd delay then light clunk?
Crash I think it is time to crawl under it and eliminate the u-joints.

Re: odd delay then light clunk?
This is really out there, but a big pause or clunk could be something in the rear axle (spider gears, bearings, etc) but I'd think that there would be other noise.
I'm really suspect of the U-joints, drivshaft splines, maybe the slip yoke is failing?
It could just plain be the trans, lets hope not.
I wish I was there to help put a finger on it.
