Rear end noise

I get a clunking noise in my 02 AWD astro. It only happens when in stop and go city driving after fluids have warmed up. I read somewhere there are C clips holding the axles that get worn. Can anyone enlighten me. One mechanic said it was probably coming from my transfer case.

Welcome to the site. The C clips can wear but don't usually make any noise until they are worn excessively. And then it's only a side to side movement. It sounds more like u-joints. The only way to know for sure is to check a few things.

I'm no expert, but it sounds like U-joints starting to go. Mine did something similar.

It has new u joints. The van has 195k miles. It is more of a slapping like whip and lash. If you remember the old positractions one would get a clunking noise in them. The fix from GM was to add bannana oil and drive in circles to work the oil into the posi clutches. It doesn't do it around corners just when doing stop and go driving. I'll recheck the u-joints and hope for something simple like that.

If your new u-joints check out okay. I'm afraid the mechanic might be right about the T-case!

Pull the rear tires off and clean the dust out of the brake drums. Make sure you don't have a leaky wheel cylinder and the shoes are adjusted. I have seen this many times and it only seems to bother in city driving.
