Re: Winthrop to Oroville thru the mountains
He he he. As I grabbed my old folding military shovel, Jen smiled and said "Oh good, i was wondering when I might get a chance to listen to this book on tape". After an hour and a half of digging, one of only two trucks i saw the entire day drove up and pulled me out. (Brian didn't join up with us until later that night).
Edit: The dude pulls up and says "Are you up here all by yourself?" And i answer, "No, of course i got the pregnant wife along too!" (Yes, Rider #1 is in the staging area!).
I need a portable winch like Dunedawg Jim's.

Re: Winthrop to Oroville thru the mountains
Congrats on the impending little one. But my other comment was going to be never go 4x4ing by yourself without a decent winch. My buddy has a nice little warn winch on a receiver hitch so he can pull forward or backwards. Between that and some pullies and recovery/tree straps you should be good. At the very least a good high quality come along in the back with some cables.

Re: Winthrop to Oroville thru the mountains
Thanks and thanks, Zammer. You too, Matty.
Will I be easy to track in the mountains with my Detroit locker?
Edit: Yeah Kevin, I know, I know. I lent out my come-along and of course never got it back. Even though I don't have all the gear, I'm still gong to go and use (ahem) good judgement. OK, so my self recovery kit consists of a 20 year old folding military shovel. Whaaat?

Re: Winthrop to Oroville thru the mountains
Everyone has to assess the risks and then do what they are comfortable with. The two (and a half) of you are physically fit and capable of hiking out if need be. That alone would cause me not to sweat it. Of course that bike on the back end kinda makes the discussion moot though.....T.Low wrote:

Re: Winthrop to Oroville thru the mountains
I had a comealong that met a simular fate. My buddy got stuck so I lent it to him and he broke it. After several years of hounding him I finally gave up and went and bought a new one myself. But you definatly can push the limits of where to go with a nice dual sport tied to the back of the van to go get help.

Re: Winthrop to Oroville thru the mountains
I have no excuse though. A come along and cable set and tree protector are easy enough. But yeah, a portable winch is the phashizzle.

Re: Winthrop to Oroville thru the mountains
Congratulations on the new addition! This looks like a great little trip to take. What route did you take to cross the mountains? My wife has family in Winthrop and this looks like it could make a nice detour. Great pictures too.
