I'm swapping in a Posi using my existing gears... Changing all bearings. How does this pattern look? Hard to see, but it doesnt look as deep in the gear as it shows in the picture. Sure is hard to see it anyhow! any advice appriciated.

Also backlash is at about 10 thou.. If i move the carrier over I think it will be too tight unless I get a better pack of shims from the dealership. Moving the carrier over 10 thou shrinks the backlash by about 7 thou.

The pics are not good enough to tell. New gears or used?

used ones.. 125k miles. its hard to get an easy to see pattern i think its pretty good though. Let me try getting one a bit better.

Since you are using your stock gears and did not remove the pinion, the pinion depth will be fine. 10 thou backlash is in spec. If you can move the carrier a couple thou that would be good but like you said it is hard to get exact without more and thinner shims. The pattern doesn't look too bad to me but is hard to tell from a pic.

How hard did the shims and carrier go in? You should have had to pound them in with a rubber mallet. Maybe you can add a 2-3 thou to the ring gear side and try to tighten the B/L up a thou or 2. I place the thin shims between the thick ones to pound in.

I agree with Dean. The pattern looks fine. Sometimes it's impossible to get the pattern perfect. You can tighten the backlash a bit if you want. I like to use the tightest that is acceptable. Used gears can be as tight as .006.

Thanks for the advice guys. I did remove the pinion however to change the bearings. So I have the pinion in with the old bearings right now as "setup" bearings, meaning the slide on and off easy. Once I press the new ones on I'll be done with the pinion side. I just hope it comes up the same with the new bearings.

I still need to preload the carrier slightly so I think that will tighten the backlash up a touch.

Your latest pictures are better quality, and to me the pattern looks good as far as I can tell. But you might wanna do a google search and compare your patterns with some from a professional ring and pinion company.... just a thought?
