Rock crawling and riding on the road are 2 totally different things. In RC, you deflate so the tire does deform and grip the rocks. On the road you want the air pressure set so you get the best handling, best ride and the best fuel economy you can get. I would have to say that running at 40 psi would give the best protection from sharp rocks you hit at speed. Sometimes even running at max pressure, the combined forces the tire encounter when your 5,000 pound van hits a single rock at say 30 mph is enough to slice the tire and dent the rim as you found out.

This makes sense to me too. I think by increasing the pressure, you are redirecting shock force from the tire to the suspension.

Wow that first picture of the sliced up sidewall on the BFG A/T is sure familiar!
I had a set of those and I swear 3 out of 4 died very premature due to sidewall gashing.
1 of them half an hour after I bought it new. POS Tire I now believe.
Anyways Michelins seem to be holding up fine but dont have a very agressive tread at all.
I have some good-years to try out too.

Never again will I waste any money on a BFG A/T.

I have read a few reviews now that say this tire is prone to sidewall piercing.

I was going through some old paperwork today. The BFG's have lasted 35,000 km according to the odometer. Add 6% for tire size correction and it's 37,100 km so I was pretty close.

That's only like 24,000 miles! I would be looking for my money back.

23,000 mi actually. Unfortunately, they are only covered for damage.
