New fuel pump record

Well after screaming for 60,000 miles my fuel pump finally got real quiet. Right in a customers driveway at the first stop of the day with many more to go. I'm driving a caravan for a day and nobody better point and laught!!!!!!!!

Please, please, someone try to hook up am aftermarket unit. This problem is costing the lot of us so much money time and time again.

While doing a search for an external fuel pump, at a reasonable cost, I ran across this. It's aviation related so it would be my guess that it's reliable. It looks like you could plumb it directly into the pressure line.

That does look like a good option. Does anyone know what is basically wrong with the Astro / Safari system? Other rides don't eat fuel pumps like they're free.

I'm going to have to knock on wood. 290k miles on my 89 and
I'm pretty sure it's the orig fuel pump. I have all the maintenance
and service records from the previous owner that includes even
stuff like replacing a headlamp. No record of a fuel pump while
he had it. And I've never replaced it while I've had it.

I agree 150%.I would love to start here a serious discussion about a in line fuel pump.Been yrs guys and I think it's time to show our experience.

Here is what I have to offer:

We know that a injection system uses the fuel pump as part of the pick-up.It also has the strainer mounted to the end of it.

I don't know if fuel could be drawn threw a dead fuel pump with a in line pump.I think if it couldn't the solution to that "might" be using the pick-up from a 1985 carb'ed Astro.

Then there is the question of the number of lines that come out of a 1985 carb'ed pick-up.Is there a supply line and I am guessing there it a return line(but I am thinking there is only three lines) and vent line to the filler.Is there a evaporator line??.I am guessing there is.

So if there is only three lines on a 1985 carb'ed pick-up,that means we have a problem finding a working pick-up for the gas tank.Again the big question here is can fuel be drawn threw a dead in tank fuel pump??.

Injected systems need 4 lines total to work.Supply,return,vent,evaporator



So I guess I am saying the in-line pump is only a part of the problem.....



Come guys,your input is surely needed.We can solve this.Let's talk this over.

The question isn't whether it can be done. We know that it can be. The problem is cost. The easiest and most cost effective way to a working fuel pump is to just replace the factory pump. The only real benefit to an external pump is ease of replacement. Most people don't keep a vehicle long enough to be worried about it.

Skip-which pumps have enough pressure and volume??.

Skip-95psi??.So your thinking of using a second regular??.I am still not sure we could use a dead in-tank pump for a pick-up.I would guess your thinking of using a pipe instead of the dead pump and fashion some sort of screen at the end of the pipe.Right???.I am thinking we would need to keep a part of the O.E.M. pick-up for the gas gauge.

When I built my son's V8 S-10 I left the old pump in the gas tank and there were no issues. The V8 mechanical pump drew fuel through the old in tank pump just fine. As for the 95 PSI of the pump in the link I posted, I don't know why the stock fuel pressure regulator wouldn't work. Any pressure over the regulated pressure is bypassed back to the fuel tank. I'm open to any opinions on this.

I don't know Skip.I does sound like a whole heck of a lot of pressure(about 30psi) for the stock regulator/return line to handle.In the case of my 1994 I splice in rubber lines to replace the rotten out ones and on the supply side I used fuel injection rubber lines which is designed to handle the pressure,but on the return line I used just fuel rubber line.I guess if I where to use this pump,I would have to replace the rubber splice return line.

I am with you on the link pump.Priced right,has more than enough pressure and volume,just trying to think threw the total job for a trouble free swap.

I am typing this on the fly(getting ready for work),do you know the volume requirement for the stock set-up???. :-k

I kind of answered some of my own questions.Looked up a cheap Airtex pump on Autozone for my 1994 CPI and it's spec's are max pressure of 90 PSI,so I would think the stock regulator would be fine,but on my CPI the Airtex is 50 GPH and the linked pump is 40 GPH.Not sure how much of a difference that would make.

Gary, can you think of any instance where your engine could burn 50 GPH?
