engine for another project-what do you think?

Post by markmitchinnh »

1987 305 truck block bored .30 over flat top pistons, new stock crank. double roller timing set, Mellings oil pump (specs unknown at this time. cam is as follows: lift@ cam(intake) 2947 @ valve 442 - lift @ cam (exhaust) 3100 @ valve-465
cam timing@ advertised duration 272 intake-282 exhaust. high rise aluminum intake with TBI adapter. modified stock TBI unit
cold air intake with K&N filter, stock ignition with high output coil, hedman hedders, Cylinder heads are 3-5 truck vortecs port
matched to intake and shaved 12,000 these came with 194 /150 valves. This engine is for my 1993 S-10 4x4 truck.

I estimate 250 hp @ flywheel witch is more then enough in this small truck with 5 speed trans.
Recently bought a 1989 Astro RS from Florida. Replaced stock engine witha 1997 5.7 vortec with TBI and replaced transmission with rebuilt 700R4 with mild shift kit.
Bought on Monday the 16th of April 2012

sounds like fun to me.
since you are planning to go TBI, these guys have few toys you might want to check out.

205 hp in a S-10 should scoot along quite nicely. It wouldn't surprise me if managed to get a bit more than that.
'89 Astro, 4.3L, TBI. Minor intake and exhaust mods. Rebuilt 700R4 trans (by me). Corvette servo, 0.5" boost valve, police grade 1-2 accumulator spring (shifts fast and solid). B&M stacked plate trans cooler. Bilstein shocks. Belltech sway bars front and back. New head unit, speakers and subwoofer. Needs paint and a new headliner.

250 or 205 hp? the 1993 4.3l s-10s had 200 hp stock, 50 extra horsies might be noticeable but 5 not so much....
99 SLT Safari AWD, G80/GT4 rear, Burgundy, 196,000 and counting (strictly AMSOIL) flowmaster 40series muffler no more cat, K&N Kone Filter, roll pan, 255/60/15 rubbers mounted to 15x8.5 inch American Racing Tailgunner wheels, billet grille, CB Radio, Alpine Deck, Shag carpet, the list goes on....
03 Chevy Silverado 2500HD, LB7 Duramax Diesel, 5 speed Allison Tranny, Crew Cab Long Bed, no muffler or cat, 4 inch turbo back and side piped. not too many other mods yet, also addicted to AMSOIL.

Thanks for the link cfm tech is where I bought the rebuild kit, the injector spacer, and I used there ideas to port the TBI I had. as far as the stock V6 it had 200,000 + on it when I bought the truck and it is smoking pretty bad so if you look into the price of a rebuild v8 verses v6 it is cheaper to go V8 specially since I made the motor mounts and got the oil pan for free from a friend. I bought the s-10 v8 manual years ago and never did the swap so now I am. The 305 was a complete and free so all I had to do is supply the vortec heads and rebuild it (oh and have it tanked and bored out.) hell I may even get 300 hp out of it with 10:01 compression. Either way I know I will have more usable torque then the 4.3 could give me & off roading requires torque more then hp.

oh i'd be happy with your set-up dont get me wrong, just seems like it should push a little more than 250, although i know that was just an approximation...
