My heater will work then stop then work again, what's wrong?

Post by papergirl79 »

Hi, I have a 97 GMC Safari AWD and Im having a problem with my heater. It will work just fine and then suddenly just stop working and no air will blow from any vent then out of no where the heater will just start working again  . Any clue what could be wrong? I work nights as a newspaper carrier and use my van to deliver the newspapers, so it is esenital that my heater work.

Is the fan not working during these times? If so, I'm assuming it isn't working on any of the speed settings. If this is the case, it could be a fan motor going out or a loose wire somewhere.

Unplug the wire that goes to the back of the blower motor itself. Clean up this one wire connection and plug it back in.

If you open the hood, you will find the blower on the passenger side behind the washer fluid bottle. I had one in my old 98 that would die. I found the motor connection to be bad. A new blower fixed it up.

Welcome to the site PG. \:D/ Good advise on the blower motor connection. If the blower is working but you are not getting any warm air you might have a vaccuum line gone bad.

A late reply. I'm new to the site and have learned a lot by reading old posts, so I will add to this in the hope that it might help someone.

When my heater fan in my 1999 Astro would stop working and then sometimes work, it turned out to be that the hamster cage fan had slipped on the heater motor shaft and would hit the housing.

I re positioned the fan on the blower motor shaft, no problem after that.
