Need help with steering

Post by GrinderBeatUdown »

I have a 95 Safari AWD and recently replaced steering box. It doesn't seem right. Kinda hard to turn one way but only when driving. When I first installed it, it would turn one way or the other on it's own while idling. How do I know what the original steering box is supposed to be..Is there a serial number or something??

If you bought it from a salvage yard it could have dirt in it. The spool valve in a power steering box is very sensitive to any dirt. You might jack up the front of the van and turn the steering wheel from lock to lock and see if whatever is in there will be flushed out.

I did that for about 1 and a half hours. The dealer said to do it with the van not running and the front jacked up..Did it and it got rid of the turning on its own, but when I drive down the road it is hard to turn. It's kinda hard to explain. Just doesn't feel right. I can get a box out of a 98 AWD but I don't know if it'll be the same.
