electric fans questions

Post by markmitchinnh »

I ran electric fans in the past and the fan burned up and then the engine seized so this time I wish to have something to warn me that the engine is getting hotter. So is there a way to hook up a light along with the gauge?
Recently bought a 1989 Astro RS from Florida. Replaced stock engine witha 1997 5.7 vortec with TBI and replaced transmission with rebuilt 700R4 with mild shift kit.

Don't you have a coolant temp gauge?

You can run two different sensor's.
One that is meant to work with a gauge and one that works with an idiot light.
Hook the idiot light sensor up to an alarm. The only problem with an idiot light sensor is by the time it goes off the damage has already started.

yes I have a gauge-seems every GM vehicle I have ever had with a temp gauge has not worked for some reason, I will install new sensors when I install my V8. To bad someone does not make a temp sensor that turns the light on soon (lower temp)

You could use a Hayden electric fan controller set to a high temp and have it turn a light on the dash. This way it would adjustable and could double as a spare fan control if needed.

Something like this.
Current rides:
2013 Toyota Tundra DC 4x4
2008 Dodge Nitro 4x4
2005 Nissan Sentra 1.8S Special Edition

Mileage spreadsheet

Vans owned:
1986 Safari 2.5L 4 speed manual - scrapped
1995 Astro 2WD conversion 4.11 posi, shift kit, DHC rock rails - sold to Skippy
1998 Astro 4x4 D44, D60, NP231, full hydraulic system with 9k# Milemarker winch and snow plow - sold to Lockdoc
2003 Astro AWD all stock - traded for a 3/4 ton truck
2005 AWD, 4.10's - sold to skippy

Something I'd consider is running a gauge if you don't. I am not a fan of not running a gauge, I hate idiot lights. Besides that you could always put a lamp in that's connected to the same power as the fan its self that way you know when it's turning on.

I plan on installing a gauge, I just wanted to have both, I do a lot of traveling in the warmer seasons and want the light so I when I am tired it catches my attention if the temp goes to high.
