Fuel pump Module _ I need help
Fuel pump Module _ I need help
Fellas,
I need help bypassing the ECM and Fuel Pump Module. In order for for the electric fuel pump in the tank to work with my Carb set up, it must get impulses from the distributor to the ecm or it will cut off in about 2 sec per the maual. Any ideas? Or can I go mechanical? If so would a mecanical pump pull through a non operating electric pump?
Thanks in advance

Yep-get a fuel pick-up from a carbed 1985 4.3 and then use a line fuel pump and a regulator. Not sure, but I would guess you can still order those fuel pick-ups like from a Autozone.Doing it that way you would get a gas gauge sending unit too.

Re: Fuel pump Module _ I need help
Just incase anyone was wondering, I dropped the tank and pulled out the electronic pump. I replaced the void with a steel tube cut to the same length as the existing pump. Then disabled the wires from the outside so the mechanical pump on the V8 can do the work without any hastle.

Re: Fuel pump Module _ I need help
Why not just replace the fuel pump module with a relay? You could wire it so that it's on when ever the key is on, or you could connect it to a manual switch.
You've got a fuel pressure regulator, right? Because I think the stock pump puts out too much pressure for a carburetor.

Re: Fuel pump Module _ I need help
Well, I'm not that electrically inclined...Not only that, the maintenance manual said in short this: The fuel pump turns on for 3 seconds when the is turned and then shuts off and until the pump receives pulses from the distributor via the ECM once the engine starts. If it doesn't recieve the pulses, it won't work. So since I have a mechanical pump on the 350, the pump can sip the fuel un restricted. I elected not to use the regulator.
My original thought was to put a pressure regulator inline with the supply and return etc, but it was easier to by-pass all that nonsense and just do it the way i did it. Fuel, Spark, and air... that's all I want to mess with.
So now I have a straight line from the tank through a filter to the pump to the carb. Simple.

Oooooooooooooooh mannnnnnnnnn. You just reminded me of one more thing I have to do to the shop van before I get rid of it. It is a carb'ed version with a correct non-fuel pump pick-up.The float gas gauge works perfectly.I should drop the tank to have the pick-up around the shop because it is that unusual and because you just never know......... More work!!.

We have talked about a dead pump situation like what you are asking about before.Opinions on both sides of the question.Mine is I wouldn't use a pick-up like that.I think if you get the pressure that way,I still question if you are getting the volume. As I said, the 1985 4.3 pick-up is by design for a carb mechanical pump.Easy answer is to get one of them from a local parts source or one of those GM discount net sites and then use a mechanical pump or in line electrical pump.Still need a regulator with a gauge.rjfalski wrote:Fellas,

Re: Fuel pump Module _ I need help
Just a piece of info for any future V8 swappers. When I built the V8 S 10 for my son I left the fuel pump in the tank and let the mechanical pump draw through it. It works just fine.

Re: Fuel pump Module _ I need help
That's interesting...As I had read that once before and for curiosity's sake, I tried blowing compressed air through mine after I removed it and didnt air to flow through mine. So I'll be counting on the SBC V8's Mechanical pump to do the work. Dropping the tank with an ATV jack wasn't that difficult anyway. I think I will be fine.
Once all back together, i used a hand bulb-type syphon pump and drew fuel up to the front without any problems. So when it starts for the first time, the fuel will be right there "rhet-ta-go"
Here are some pix of it.... the rest can be seen on the "1990 Shorty Project" viewtopic.php?f=16&t=6520 post or at photobucket.com

Glad to see you used braided hose on the pressure side of the pump.

Yepper-I am lucky that the donor V8 Astro has that on it.Of course I saved that and will be reusing it.
