Transfer case shift motor install?

Searched but did not find any post on replacing the shift motor, so it's either very easy or to hard and everyone takes it to a shop.

Any input on the subject?
I've looked at the transfer case and it looks like the front drive shaft flange has to come off to get the motor out.

To run down the problems I'm having with my 2001 cargo/race bike hauler/ex lottery van :)
Blowing atc fuse, check motor for short got a 2 or 3 ohm reading. New fuse worked for about a week.
Then after 5 or 6 fuses I gave up ](*,) , looking around the net it seems to be a common problem.
But I can not get a straight answer on replacing the motor.

And with the coming Zombie Apocalypse I really need my AWD to work for my trip to Alaska :muhaha:

Thanks guys!
Hunter

There are a couple posts.

Cleaning the encoder motor.

2000 AWD doesn't work.

Looks like you need to pop the front drive shaft off the t-case and just unplug/unbolt the encoder motor.

Hi Hunter,

I posted earlier but I do not see it so I will reiterate that you can change the encoder motor while not removing the transfer case. I remember having to disconnect the front drive shaft and I may have removed the rear engine mount brace. A lift and a tall jackstand will make the job go pretty smoothly.

OK, here is the problem I have. I can't seem to get the front shaft off the T-case. My front shaft is a CV at T-case, I'm thinking the CV is C clipped inside the T-case.

Hi Hunter. If you can't separate it from the tcase, then maybe you can remove it at the front instead. I know that is very easy. There is a flange with four bolts. Then maybe with a firm tug, it will come out of the transfer case. This is just a guess ... I haven't actually done it, but I figure it's better than nothing. Hopefully someone with more experience will chime in. Good luck.

If you have a helper, it should be very easy. Have the helper put gloves on and put pressure on the cv part to try and pull it out of the t-case. Now you take a brass drift and a hammer and tap on the cv housing in the direction of the front diff. It should just "pop" right off the splined output shaft. If you don't have a helper, you may have to hit the brass drift harder is all. The front axle cv shafts are taken out of the front diff on the 97+ vans the same way.
