V8 Astro in California

Post by markmitchinnh »

OK so I did some research and found out that I can install a V8 and be legal in California (in case we move there) So the engine I have will need a factory intake and cylinder heads (1996 parts)
I have vortec 305 heads on it now along with a 4 barrel aluminum intake so if anyone is interested in a set of rebuilt 305 vortec heads that have been shaved 15,000 and the pro performance intake let me know. I am keeping the headers for now. According to my research as long as the engine is newer and is stock and has all the smog things it came with in the vehicle it came out of then it is legal. So I am installing it soon and will pick up the exhaust manifolds later. ANy info you all may have is greatly appreciated. Mark
Recently bought a 1989 Astro RS from Florida. Replaced stock engine witha 1997 5.7 vortec with TBI and replaced transmission with rebuilt 700R4 with mild shift kit.

I know and that/he is why I did my home work. I spoke to my wives son in law and he called the appropriate legal folks and gave me the whole lowdown. I will still need to do some work to get the necessary parts but for now I can put the V8 in my new 89 Astro RS and worry about the legal matters when and if we move to California. I figure if I have the stock exhaust manifolds, and intake manifold in my possession I can swap it to be legal when I get there.

You should still be able to run headers you just need to have your o2 sensor in the exhaust for the fuel injection to work right.
