I just bought my next astro! A 1999 awd for $900. Pics soon but still way too busy at work to play with it much. The main issue is that since previous owner had new keys made, about 25% of the time it will not start and you need to wait 10-15 mins before it will. It also tripped security light on dash and that is on all the time. Any suggestions appreciated, I'll read them during the next starting episode! Thanks, Kelly

The issue isn't the keys. I had spares made for my 98 so I could keep one in my wallet and it never bothered. I would be more inclined to look into the actual security system. I am not familiar with them so I can't help any more.

Up by the fuse box is a little light grey plastic box about the size of a dental floss pack, hanging by a few small gauge wires. Inside is a chip board / remove it and see whether this cures the problem.

Dune, tried removing the board as you suggested. Gave me something to do while waiting for it to start at hardware store! Unfortunately, it did not help. Thanks for the suggestion though, Kelly

Here's my take:
The alarm system could have features like starter interrupt, and fuel pump cutoff. Good luck trying hack it yourself. Simply removing the chip might lock out everything as a security feature. You need to use the FOB to disarm the system, or my van also has a valet switch .... a tiny button mounted on the OBD connector, which can also be used to suspend the alarm system. My system also came with a manual. If the problem persists, you can attempt to remove the alarm system (and possibly make things worse), or take your van to a professional alarm installer.

When they work, alarm systems are a great thing. My van has never breen broken into. It even earns you a discount on insurance.

This is my first car alarm and I'm not impressed! It is factory and if the key FOB is used to unlock door it still acts up, randomly. Previous owner said they had no problems until had new keys made. I probably should have asked what happened to original keys but didn't think to. Can I call a dealer with the VIN and get a key made? A quick search online showed that several types of key security systems could have been used but I may that mistaken as well. I was thinking of replacing ignition switch with a new one with key, any thoughts? It pains me so but perhaps a trip to the local dealer is in order. I must be desperate! I try to use the time when it won't start to catch up on work calls during business hours or read, relax or talk with the boys if they are there. Trying to convince myself a higher power is telling me to "slow down and smell the roses!"

Yeah, your VIN will help them immeasurably. But when you do it that way, you have to show them your title. Something to do with protecting them from liability.

Update on security issue. I had my local dealer cut a key from my VIN. The new key works much better but I have had several issues with it. The dealer said that this is not that uncommon a problem and that just a key may fix it or make it tolerable but usually they end up putting in a new lock cylinder as well. Something about the tumbler springs wearing out? Anyways, pretty darn good for now and I'll start planning for another trip to the dealer! Kelly
