Celebrate Independence Day

Post by T.Low »

Every Independence Day I think about what our ancestors went through.

The Lowell's (T."Low" is short for T.Lowell) were one of the founding families of Boston. A certain John Lowell was actually John Hancock's clerk and worked closely with Paul Revere during the whole revolutionary effort.

On the night of Revere's famous ride, he afterward met back up with John Lowell at about 2:30 am, where Lowell informed him that Hancock's trunk containing all the incriminating war papers was still up in the meeting room above Buckman's Tavern and the British Regulars were closing in. They would all certainly be hung should the trunk fall into to the hands of the British Regulars.

Lowell and Revere scurried over to the tavern and grabbed the trunk and as they carried it across the Green of Boston Commons heading for a safe hiding place in the woods, the Red Coats and the Militia came to a head, a shot was fired, and the American Revolution had begun. They ran with the trunk through a volley of gun fire.

Lowell and Revere hid in the swampy woods all night long, as the British Regulars marched past.

Although not one of the signers, that same John Lowell was present at the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

My father and my older brother are both John Lowells.

Happy Independence Day everyone, and thank you to all that have risked their lives for the Freedom and Independence that we enjoy.

Nice to see another SAR member show up. My mother got busy and traced our family tree back beyond the Pilgrim's landing -- all the way back to 945! So we, too, fought in the Revolution (and a whole lot of other "conflicts").

In Billings (and surrounding environs), we won't be able to celebrate with "illuminations" today. We're under Red Flag warnings for much of the state. We set a record of 104º yesterday!
