There should be no play at all. If the pinion (the part of the rear axle the driveshaft bolts to) has any play it needs to be looked into ASAP. It could be bad bearings or a loose pinion nut.

it has play

Replaced pinion bearing last weekend so it should be tight turn both sides . Any other ideas of what the problem could be. and how bad is this .

If you just replaced the bearings, did you replace the crush sleeve and properly torque the pinion nut? Sounds like the pinion nut needs to be tightened.

only pinion

Tighten it up until the play is out of it and then go just a little bit more. Run it for a short drive and check it again.

any body knows what

In order to torque the pinion nut correctly, you MUST remove the wheels, brake drums, axle shafts, and carrier. Once the carrier is out, you need to pull the pinion nut off, remove the yoke and remove the pinion and install a new crush sleeve. Once the new crush sleeve is installed, you can then re-install the pinion and tighten the yoke down until you get 6 to 10 inch pounds while spinning the pinion over. Gently tap the pinion with a hammer to make sure the bearings are set and you don't get a false reading.

it can get quite hot especially if towing. I would say 200 degrees F would be normal under some hard driving.

thanks it was hot

It was hot just didnt know it got that hot.

I changed the universal joint and the some of the sound and vibration went away . Still have a bit of noise took it to a local mechanics said the noise might be normal.

Thank all for the help. \:D/
