slight twist play in half shafts, OK?

Post by photo_van »

I've got the frontend torn down to the bones to instal 4.10's, replace ball joints, bushings, etc, etc.

I notice there is slight "twisting" play between the half shaft axle and the inner CV joint on both the L & R half shaft. Both have loose(ish) clamps on the inner boots and have been throwing grease for quite some time.

Any recommendations on whether to replace or just repack??? 100,000 miles. Any feed back is greatly appreciated as I'm trying to get this back together today!

Thanks

Depends on the cost of the reman's but if money allows, I would replace them.

$57 for the remanufactured, $70 for new. Seems like it would be worth the extra $13 ($26) for new. Hitch being I can get the used ones tomorrow, new not until Tuesday. ](*,)

I wouldn't be afraid of the reman units. I put a set on the SPB and they included a lifetime warranty.

so I drove 60 miles to pick up some reman axles from Auto Zone. Two boxes with the right #'s, to different axles, neither were correct. I felt them for "play" and it was similar to my used joints. I Ended up with new ones for less from Rock Auto. They also have a bit of play so I'm guessing some is ok.

In any case, I hopefully won't need to worry about those again!
