radius arm idea

I have a suggestion for those researching a SAS. I have SAS'ed a few toyota's in my time and at one point I looked into ways of doin it to a 4runner that was my daily driver,so I really didn't want much lift. I searched and decided on radius arms,not just any radius arms,Land Rover radius arms. These arms have bushings fore and aft instead of top and bottom,with the arm connection under the axle forming a skid/axle protector. This bushing configuration leaves the top of the axle clear and unobstructed for clearance,coils,shocks,with nothing to hit frame rails or anything. A SAS would be possible without going a mile high. The Land Rover Discovery arms use standard shackle style bushings at the axle and a standard Ford style pin bushing at the frame,they are long enough to get good travel and are cheap at junk yards. I think its worth considering and would love to see it. If you are still in the "gathering info stage" find a "disco" and check out the front end. These arms could be mated to any axle.

i was investigating these more and found the 1989-1998 discovery's use the ford style chassis mount and those seem to be the preferred mount. The new Mercedes-Benz G63 uses the same style arms and mounts on the civilian and military spec vehicles very interesting indeed

What I'd use is toyota fj80. The component are better than land rover and the axles themselves are strong and wide enough for an astro.
I had amassed a bunch of fj80 junk for a Tacoma I had but never made it happen.
The radius arms are perfect for a streetable 4x4 that doesn't need mad flex but needs to handle and ride well on solid axles. Almost as easy as leafs too!

One of the cleanest and most stock-like 4x4 conversions I have ever seen done to an Astro/Safari was using the complete frontend out of a mid-to-late 70s Ford 1/2 ton 4x4. Correct width Dana 44 solid axle, coils and radius arms. If I ever decided to put a solid axle under mine, this is the way I would go.
