headers scare me

Post by irocblu »

Not much to choose from. Did find a set from summit racing not to bad, good price, there shorties. Painting them and having the paint last along with plug access, its got me guessing. For now I will go back with the manifolds. I'm going to paint them just as a test, like to seem stay good. Wanted to heard from anyone who has painted their headers or, manifolds for that matter. Thinking about Rust-o-leum or VHT, what say ya'll?

From my experience working in the Chevy engine plant dyno rm the headers that lasted the longest was Headman and the worst was Hooker.Burn-outs/warping was common place.

So for me,I didn't want to deal with that on my 383 Ole Yellar project van.A trick from stock car guys is to extrusion port cast iron headers. I know long tube headers generally do not start to come in until around 3,000 rpm and if I port the cast iron deal right,it will help the bottom end better. On a street driven vehicle that is what I want.I can still coat them like the tube headers with no worry about warping, leaks,or burn-outs.

Oh one other thing.I am very careful to do things once because while the engine is out and the sub-frame is out,I can get to them.Once everything is in the van, some things are a serious headache.

These are the headers I'm going to use:

I would be very carefull about using paint on headers.
do not use a paint that isnt rated for extremely high temperatures.
You dont want a fire !
it wouldnt be the first case of spray paint igniting off from headers.

I have given some thought to porting out my manifolds. I was told I'm wasting time. Low end scenario makes a lot of sense.Adding to your suggestion, I remember way back, read an article on a set of headers. If I can explain this right, these had a sleeve inside each header tube at the flange. Smaller diameter tube at the flange, exhaust port, was to catch some of the exhaust try to return in the cylinder. Always wondered about that on a set of manifolds. Manifolds are so much easier. Thanks for your suggestion. And for paint autozone sells rust oleum and vht 2000 deg hi temp in the spray. Thanks again

The extrusion type porting by design for stock car racing of cast iron headers is for building torque coming off the corners. It reaches in parts of those headers with abrasive gel type material forcing through the casting to reach area's you can't.I first came in contact with it yrs ago while attending a auction in Syr that is mainly for oval track racers.I have see the numbers as empirical proof the improvement.I've talked to guys about that over the 17 yrs we where there buying parts we got for resale.
Now I am not a supported of headers for street used vehicles normally.Mainly because if you look at the header companies charts themselves, headers effectiveness start coming into play in RPM ranges seldom used in street driven vehicles. But,I'm building the Ole Yellar project 383 V8 van and 383's love exhaust, leaning on alittle longer cam duration the exhaust side to build torque. So these style headers are a excellent solution to compliment the type of 383 engine I'm building with long term reliability and not have to deal with all the issues I stated come along with tube type headers.

found this website http://www.techlinecoatings.com/CoatingProducts.htm They have an epoxy coating for exhaust manifolds and headres. they spoke of it being applied inside the exhaust as well. i'm going to look into this company, check for reviews. porting out these manifold of mine looks imposible. a gel or epoxy poured inside that hardens to a fire resistant coating might be the way to go for me.

I'm planning to send mine out for both the porting and coating. The porting part of it being the most important to me so they are done right to the maximum performance without effected the long term reliability.Big isn't always best. The shape does make a huge difference.

Porting just isn't in the cards right now. May get 2nd set and experiment on them. Just clean these and painted with VHT 2000 deg aluminum
