Sun Gear failure?

Post by chesehd »

Hey gang.

I had the tranny replaced last year in my '03 AWD due to Sun Gear failure.

Today, out of the blue, I'm getting the same bump on the highway that preceded the previous failure. Less than a year and only 8500 miles. I had a shop do it and I have a 36 mo/100k warranty so that isn't a worry.

My question is what can lead to this happening so soon, again? I have towed a pop up (800 lbs) and one travel trailer (about 2100 lbs). Always in 3rd and in tow/haul mode.

Should my fears be correct and another replace/rebuild be needed, I'm planning on asking the shop to use a Beast sun gear to avoid repeating the problem yet again.

Argh!

Alrighty...so...the kick was felt on the way to the church this morning but not on the way home. But it was felt intermittently the last time there was a problem also, which will make it a bugger to diagnose if it isn't happening consistently.

Will a scanner pick up what caused the transmission to raise the system pressure and cause the hard shifts or will it only indicate code XXXXX to indicate that the system pressure was high?

Ken, Are you running an additional tranny cooler with your set-up?

With so many solenoids and valves etc it might be that something is getting hung up on occasion, best to have it scanned and see if that points you in the right direction.

No extra cooler yet. On the list of things to do but I don't tow with it often and not for long at that.

Only so many $$$ and too many problems to spend it on.

I guess I will need to give the scanner a try. This might be the final bit of convincing I need to let the wifey relax on getting the Scangauge II.
