3/4 ton leaf springs?

Post by LJRacing91 »

Recently I've discovered how different the steel leaf springs and the composite leaf springs act. My 93 holds heavy loads much better than my 95, and the 95 actually sagged so far as to seemingly ride on the bump-stops, and after not seeing a slight (maybe 1/2"-1") dip, the 1" tow hitch scraped the ground. I'm aware I'm most likely overloading the rear end itself, but I would first like to address the van almost literally dragging down the road. I've considered a couple options, including a link I found in searching the forum, for heavy duty replacement springs specifically for our vans. (http://www.stengelbros.com/SteelReplacementSprings.htm)

I've also thought about 3/4 ton springs from a parts yard, since there are several around Houston, and I believe that should be more than enough capacity. There's the issue of price difference considering performance difference. If the used 3/4 ton springs will do what the new replacements will do, and are that much cheaper (since install seems to be simply bolt off/bolt on), then I'd rather save a little bit of $$$ unless the difference in performance will be that great.

My main question becomes, do the 3/4 ton leaf springs simply bolt up without modification? I've researched that some of the 3/4 ton leaf springs hold up to 4500lbs (combined rear end weight) and those replacements in the link hold 4000.

Any advice or thoughts? It won't be done today or this week, but I'm trying to map out some improvements for this van so I don't drag the ground any more. Thanks everybody!

I haven't been able to make time to get a price on the used springs yet, I was curious if anyone else had a ball park figure, or any example.

I'm not sure they're readily available, since truck parts at the yards around here do go fast. I was just asking in case I do run across a set while I'm on a visit.
