Rear Diff fluid. . .

Post by Quihyp »

I just returned from Pep boys and they gave me 2 quarts of 75w140. From reading the forums here I should have gotten 80w90 and they messed up? Is a high-viscosity synthetic better for a high-mileage (180k-ish) engine?

80W-90 is all you need for the rear diff.

For the engine though, it's a little too thick! :muhaha: As long as your oil pressure is good, run either 5W-30 or 10W-30. No need to run synthetic unless you can buy it on sale cheaper than dino oil. I find that the case at NAPA sometimes.
Current rides:
2013 Toyota Tundra DC 4x4
2008 Dodge Nitro 4x4
2005 Nissan Sentra 1.8S Special Edition

Mileage spreadsheet

Vans owned:
1986 Safari 2.5L 4 speed manual - scrapped
1995 Astro 2WD conversion 4.11 posi, shift kit, DHC rock rails - sold to Skippy
1998 Astro 4x4 D44, D60, NP231, full hydraulic system with 9k# Milemarker winch and snow plow - sold to Lockdoc
2003 Astro AWD all stock - traded for a 3/4 ton truck
2005 AWD, 4.10's - sold to skippy

It was like 15/bottle and I'm primarily concerned with the longevity of my differential. I'm not sure it's been changed possibly ever, honestly. is the 75-140 going to hurt it? Should I exchange it for some 80w90?
