Looking for shock recommendations for an 04 AWD

Post by arlon »

Stock suspension height, 2"body lift. I have Edelbrock IAS shocks on the front but just broke one driving home from the grocery store. Top of the valve/piston rod just snapped off. After looking at the pieces, I'm not sure that's the same shock I want to put back!

Front shock for 2004 AWD...

Hi,
My 2003 AWD Astro has KYB Gas Adjust in front and Monroe air shocks in rear. Shocks installed at 50,000 miles or so and now vehicle has 125,000 miles. They are still working OK.

Rancho or Pro comp or Bilstein or KYB are all pretty good.
Monroe may give softer ride.
Basically, OEM soft shocks are usually twin tube, and mono tube high pressure skocks are firmer.
It is usually a trade off , comfort versus performance.

AP.

I ended up ordering a set of the Rancho RS5000 shocks. Nothing available locally so they had to be ordered online. Should be here Friday.

So did you get those rancho's installed? How do you like them? How do they affect the ride? Any harshness?

I don't like them as much as the Edelbrocks as far as drive goes. They nose dive a little more and more corner roll. Just going down the road, I see little difference. The BIG difference is the Edelbrocks broke on pavement (maybe why they don't make them anymore) and hopefully the rancho's won't. The piston rods in the Rancho shocks look about twice what was in the Edelbrocks.
