Just an update.

I filled the tank and put in 24.191 gals. (US) tonight on my return from my trip. This means that the van will definitely run with only 3 gals. in the tank. I don't know if I want to test much lower than this though.... I'll let one of you guys continue with the experiment from here.

Peter... Top off the tank. Next use the fuel pump to pump out between 3/4 and 7/8 the capacity of the tank (remember on a tank this size there is at least 2-3 gallons that the pump can't pick up). Now do fuel pressure and volume tests. If either or both of these is low and you have a new fuel filter...

If you have a 4L60(700R4) and not the 4L60E then no there is no temp sensor. Not sure without looking it up what is in a '96 AWD.

My scan gauge gives me trans temp so I can keep an eye on things, but you could still have the OD clutches get overheated without the pan temp getting too high. I was slightly wrong... The washer is always grounded. A "relay" (transistor) on the wiper module controls the washer by applying 12v on the pink wire. You need to test if you have 12v exiting the module. If you do, you need to do a voltage drop test on the pink wire to make sure it is ok....

If the power feed wire is pink or pink/black I think the power feed is constant with key on and the switch is in the ground side. Either way IIRC the relay is in the wiper module that is mounted on the wiper motor housing. I'll go look up the diagram as I have a couple of minutes.
