It's been a while for me....
So sad to see Tom has passed. I never got the chance to meet him but remember his build well and I remember all the trip reports he posted. I always loved reading them. Sucks that he had to leave us so early in life but God needed him more than we did. RIP buddy!

Very nice. With some apparently needed maintenance, she'll make you a nice reliable van.

Re: On the hunt for a Unicorn (2005 AWD astro/safari )
The only differences between the 1999 - 2002 and 2003 - 2005 vans is that the 03 - 05 vans have rear disc brakes, 6 lug axles, 16" wheels and they seem to have either stiffer or more arched rear leaf springs. Other than that they are identical. I personally prefer the 02 and older with the rear...

Re: 2000 Astro will not start..
I agree...start with fuel pressure. The wrong or a defective pump could have been installed. Next, I would pull the plugs and replace them. The van has 160k on it and you got it with 110k. I am willing to bet the plugs have never been changed.

Re: 97 astro, noisy fuel pump...
Have you put fresh gas in it? I would change the fuel filter first. Then throw a pressure tester on the fuel rail and see what it does when it dies.

Re: Checking if a wheel hub/bearing is bad?
To properly check the wheel bearings, you need to remove the wheel and tire, caliper and rotor. You can then spin the hub over freely and feel for any roughness or noise and look for any play. The 03 has a hub unit so no need to mess with rotors unless it's time anyway. The ABS unit is internal to t...

Re: AC Compressor/Clutch Seized?
Spray some rust penetrant on it. Hopefully you can break it free. The next option is a bypass pulley and new belt.

Re: 98 Running AND Starting issues
I would start with fuel pressure check then pull the cap off to inspect it and the rotor. After that, I would look at pulling the distributer out and inspect the gear on the end. We have seen quite a few of these bad over the years on here.

Re: Anybody Home?
I am still here...once in a while. I sold my last van to skippy a while ago and have slowly been disappearing for a while at a time. Last summer, we were camping so much I didn't log in for almost 2 months. Whats hard is that GM stopped making these vans on May 13, 2005 so there are no new versions ...

Re: Operable locking diff for 7.5" GM
Herbie, I wouldn't fear the gear! Go with 4.10's. You won't notice any worse fuel economy, you'll have more towing, pulling and climbing power and the van won't bog on hills. I went with 4.10's in my 05 that ran no lift and only slightly larger diameter tires. My mileage went from around a 15.3 aver...
