removing rear door pins
i've found a donor van which i need to remove the lower dutch doors from. now i know some of you have done this.....some with more ease than others....but any tips or tricks which may make the process easier given i'll have to go to the van and can take limited tools with me...may also have limited access to power so don't want to get to the stage where i have to use a grinder.....

Re: removing rear door pins
well, the FSM says to use tool J41226 cargo door hinge pin remover but doesn't show a pic or how its used, then it tells to remove trim and licence plate bulb harness, blah, blah, blah then drive pins out while a buddy holds the door.
Most folks take a torch to the hidge and use a BFG to drive them up,I've seen others use a grinder to cut the pins, then just pull the door off, then get a hinge repair kit,you might be able to use a hacksaw but that could be tricky if your by yourself. If you can take some pics of how you do it, please do.

Re: removing rear door pins
I believe SoCaliV8 Darren had a method for removing the pins that involved heating the top part of the hinge with a torch and then using a hammer and punch to pop out the pin. As I understand it, the top of the pin has raised ridges that really set the pin into the hinge. That and time only makes the pin harder to remove.

Re: removing rear door pins
Heres a link to what the pin/hidge set-up looks like (just click on the diagram) you will see what Rob is talking about by the top of the pin just under the head being larger.

BTW,it seems as tho autozone uses the FSM diagrams on their site, they are identical to the ones I have in my 95 FSM,saves me the trouble of scanning/uploading/linking

We have to learn to be our own best friends because we fall too easily into the trap of being our own worst enemies.
Not to steal a thread but read this several times and must say it concerns me, of course personally that is. If I become my own best friend, will that mean I'll be borrowing things from myself ?

Re: removing rear door pins
Having done this myself, I must say that the easiest way is to purchase replacement pins and to saw through the old ones with a hacksaw. 5 minutes to get the doors off.

Re: removing rear door pins
If you need to get the pins out in a hurry, as in a J/Y with no power and minimum tools, just cut through them with a quality 18 tpi hacksaw blade.
Then when you have them home heat the hinge with gas torch and persuade the hinges out with a BFH and a long punch.......

Re: removing rear door pins
I've had to do a few that way. I tried the hinge pin tool as I borrowed it from crappy tire. ( yes they have a tool lending program whihc is free btw) The tool sucked on 15 yr old hinges. Wouldn't even budge em. Had to cut torch then pound.SoCalli V8 wrote:If you need to get the pins out in a hurry, as in a J/Y with no power and minimum tools, just cut through them with a quality 18 tpi hacksaw blade.

Re: removing rear door pins
I had to cut mine out too! I heated and beat the tird out of it and noway that thing was coming out. You can go to Harbor Frieght and get one of the 8 dollar grinders and get you some grinding wheels (disks) to cut it out although that won't help you in the junkyard.

Re: removing rear door pins
This is probably a bit late but for future reference.. Those hinge pins are a major PITA to get off, I just recently went through this after being rear ended. Things were looking great, I got $4500 for the damage from a local trucking company whose driver hit me in one of their delivery trucks, not wanting to go through insurance they cut me a company check. All I needed to replace was the 2 rear doors and the rear bumper, I was able to find a set of doors for $150 and had then painted for $200, the bumper is like $150 so I was happy to have some cash left over...
So now since the doors that I bought were "cut" off the donor van they still had the hinges in them. I spent a whole Saturday afternoon heating and pounding, tired an air hammer, PB Blaster, etc and only managed to get out 1 pin. Next I cut one off and was left with the head of the pin still in the hinge.. not any easier to remove.
So after searching the web for a while I found that hinge pin remover from eastwood (link above) and ordered it, even though it was for pins up to 2 7/8" I figured I would give it a try, after all it was only $30
I had to have 6mm machined off each side of the inside of the "C" section for it to fit over the hinge but it worked like a charm! a few turnes of the bolt and the hinges will "POP" and you can tap them out the rest of the way easily with a punch, I wish I would have found this tool sooner. And you can do this by yourself, I just put a long narrow bolt back into the hinge after I poped each pin and when they were all out just lift the door off. I think it took me longer to change over the power lock from my old door to the new one. Hope this helps someone in the future...
