G80 hunting

Post by ihatemybike »

So I'm gonna be schlepping through Chicagoland boneyards on half price day and I'm making a list of things I want to find. Seeing that neither of my vans have posi, I'd like to find a couple posi units that fits. I've only taken one diff apart so far, so which parts do I need? Which vehicles should I be looking at other than Astro/Safaris? I'm thinking 4x4 Blazers and S-10s. Maybe 1/2 ton pickups? Camaros and TAs?

I want to match the gear ratio on Green GU5/3.23. Grumpy maybe switch to GT4/3.73 or GT5/4.10, but that would mean I need to swap the front as well.

What do we use in the front diffs on AWD vans? Is there a posi/locker system for it?

3.23???? got to at least have 3.42. I believe your vans to be 28 spline axles, it is possible that S10 or camaro have 26 spline so be sure and check. You need the 7.625 inch gears for the rears. The front diff is interchangable between s10 and astro/safari except for the right side axle tube on s10 has disconnect.
You will also have to check grumpy to see if it has flanged front axles or splined. 97 was the cross-over year.

I don't think you will need a locker for the front axle. Unless you plan on lifting and serious offroading.

All this gives me 5-6 inches of lift.

Green is my interstate warrior, so the stock 3.23 doesn't bother me. I'll take the lower interstate RPMs and higher MPG. I can consistently get over 18 MPG with my weekly driving and break into the low 20s in my travels.

With Grumpy I hope to stay a step or two behind my wife's Liberty in its off-road ability.

The more I browse the forums, the more it seems like no one knows about car-part.com It is a database of carparts from junk yards all over the US. Very easy to find things like seats, sway bars, grills, and G80s! So, i suggest you go there and give it a shot http://www.car-part.com

for the rear axle, you can browse s10 2wd and 4x4 models (except the ZR2 off-road package), and camaro and firebird models from model year 1990 and newer. that is supposed to be the changeover from 26 spline axles to 28 spline axles.

Went hunting today. Didn't find any G80 RPO codes, but 2 Blazers were missing the labels. I'll have the dealer look up the codes off the VINs.
