Re: This kind of turns my stomach
Don't crash then....
But seriously, it is a van, you know, where a person sits up front without a whole lot between you and the front. The Astro/Safari actually doesn't do all that bad and it seems the biggest concern is with the driver's feet.
I'm willing to accept the risk.

Re: This kind of turns my stomach
Yeah, that is what I have read and hear about with these Astro's is leg and feet problems in a crash.Just got to wonder how the newer more mpg tin cans do.I would think about the same or worse.Did you see where the van bent in the center taking up some of the force behind the driver??.I would think that is a good thing.

Re: This kind of turns my stomach
I've been researching it and Chevys pretty much have the worst crash tests. Most of the tin cans even fold up in the front but the folding stops right at the cab.
If you look at that Astro picture you'll notice also that because the center folded it forced the drivers head into the steering wheel

Re: This kind of turns my stomach
Any idea of how it compares to a Vanagon, or Toyota van?
But, yeah, wrecked cars, especially ones that are the same model that I drive, kinda make me loose my appetite.

Re: This kind of turns my stomach
ATM I drive an Astro too. But actually your cars held up decent. The front end should crush to a certain point then stop before the cab. All those test you showed me did that

Re: This kind of turns my stomach
Guess I see this crash test a little differently than most. After watching it several times, it looks to me like the dummy fairs pretty well because the impact looks to be absorbed from bumper brackets and then from there to subframe which we all know is underneath the occupants, floor and floor braces to rockers plus the absorbtion by rear of van being lifted. In other words most of the absorbtion is happening below driver front to rear.
Not sure of speed of this test but if it's 5MPH,,there is a problem, big time.

Keep searching ... you will note that GM did do updates to the M-body which helped but most importantly you will note that many folks who got in accidents in these vehicles look back and are happy to have been in it and not something else.
I must also throw in that that image is a head on ... aka drunk driver or something that is just head on. Most of the time you can see if coming and steer out of the way .. which means what? off-set / side impacts / rear ends are more bound to happen. I get to say this because of all the accidents I have been and I kid you not.
How heavy and fixed is that concrete block in that test?
How heavy and "rolling" is the typical vehicle you will see on the road? IMO the Astro / Safari's have the upper hand.
When the Jeep Cherokee hit me my on driver front side ... he got way more damage then I did. When I got plowed by the late 90s 4Runner SR5 with pushbars going at least 80kph and I was stand still I got rear-bumper replaced + trailer hitched straightened ... he had whole front damage including rad core + water pump. T-boned much? yeah I have been ... no fuel leak *wipes sweat* but that was not fun since I also have lifted my ride but again I was fine. The list goes on.
Accidents happen - Reaper (haha).
Shyt Happens - Forest Gump.

Re: This kind of turns my stomach
Of the times my vans have be hit the van has always came out the better of the two vehicles. Seems these things are actually tougher than most other things on the road.
