Hit a deer
Thursday evening we were towing my dads 24 foot travel trailer out to the lake to set it up for the weekend. As we were just about there heading down the back road from the right hand side of the road we see this deer come just flying out of the bushes . I hardly had any time to react not that I can really do much in the way of emergency manovers towing the trailer on wet cement. The deer came running out at 90 degrees to the road and just missed the front of the van. He hit on the passenger side just above the rear wheel and then his head hit the front of the trailer. I was expecting him to go under the tires on the trailer and was getting ready for the ride to get really ugly as I figured the trailer was going to skid and lift up when the deer went under. Lucky for us he spun out of the way of the tires and went off the side of the road and into the ditch. We pulled over a few hundred feet away where there was room. I went to survey the damage to the truck and trailer and to my amazement we took no damage at all on the van and the trailer just has a small dent on the front right corner but thats it. I can probably pull the dent out using my finishing hammer and a big magnet.
As for the poor deer he died probably the second his head hit the trailer as I beleive it broke his neck. We went down and dropped off the trailer and on the way back the game warden and the RCMP were there just picking him up so we stopped and gave our name and so forth. The cop said that they get a few deer hit along that stretch every year. He was surprised that we killed the deer and took no damage. He said that some one called 911 when the deer got hit expecting them to come out and save the deer. He said he was glad that when they got there it was dead as they were just going to have to shoot it anyhow. Can you imagine camping with your kids they see the deer get hit then watch as the police show up and put 2 shots into it to finish the job. I am just glad that it died instantly and didn't suffer. But let me tell you its a bad feeling seeing the accident coming and knowing that there is nothing you can do to avoid it you just get to brace for impact and hope for the best.

Add Libby to the list. She murdered Quebecois Bambi back in the summer of 05' on a road not far from home. It is said that on a dark night, one can hear the call of the defenceless dear's mother calling out to her young one...

Re: Hit a deer
Lucky you got away pretty much clean. I had to pull bambi out of the front grill. The van was toast.
This is after I beat on it and such but the front end damage ( lights grill bumper and such) is all from the deer.

Re: Hit a deer
And you didn't take your kill with you and have a deer roast!!!
I don't much like venison (although people say it is because I have never had it cooked right), but I resolved to take any deer I hit for food for our dog. Maybe some for me too, but most for the dog.

Do so and you'll be busted for poaching. They don't care how it died, unless you slap a deer licence on it, you're screwed-!

Re: Hit a deer
Pennsylvania Commonwealth law allows you to take your roadkill home for your personal use. Of course, this doesn't mean you should go out and deliberately run Bambi over.

Re: Hit a deer
In NY if you want the deer they will tag it for you so you have a valid tag on it. Personally after a deer got hit I would not be the one to want the meat. There is very little meat on a deer to begin with and then when it gets hit on the road the meat is all bruised up and you are picking bones and bone splints out of the meat. It really is more of a hassle than it is worth.
Gearing up for another great camping season Camper is re packed and ready to roll.

Re: Hit a deer
the rcmp said that they were going to cut it up and use it in some bear traps and try and get some of the problem bears moved out of the area. I was expecting the van and trailer to take a huge pounding when i saw him coming out from the bushes. Its funny you said to take it with you the RCMP officer was joking that i could have had some free sausage if I had picked it up but now it was his so he was going to feed it to the bears.
I had the dogs in the van with me and didn't think it would be too good trying to put a deer into the van as well. Plus I think my wife would have killed me if i took the deer to give to my hunting buddies. Even if he would have been good eats as I got him right in the head so the meat shouldn't be too bruised.
It just goes to show don't mess with the van!!

Re: Hit a deer
Not in Ontario. You can keep what you hit. Some yahoos in the North thought that meant they could go hunting with their trucks, but they were quickly disabused of that thought when they hit a MNR decoy dead.peter wrote:Do so and you'll be busted for poaching. Re: Hit a deer
I have about 10 lbs of deer (ground deer burger) in my freezer, I was told it was mixed with a small amount of sausage to make it taste better (putting some fat into some naturally lean meat....) I plan on getting together with my brother towards the end of the summer and cooking it.
Many of my relatives are hunters, and have ate deer meat many times, as well as more than a few other animals (squirrel, rabbit..etc) the best was when my cousins who lived in Louisiana, for quite some time, made more or less a pot roast with deer meat, (potatoes, carrots) and of course, cajun spices..... could eat that again anytime.... tasted as good or better than beef to me...
Most places, if you ask, they will allow you to keep some or all of the deer, but usually they would also want you to remove it too, (although as stated earlier, alot of the kills, if they are fresh/not mixed with pavement too much, one of the people who pick it up, already have plans for it, from keeping for themselves, or even sometimes donating the meat to feed the homeless...
if you got any names or cards from the officers, call and ask what they did with it, they might be getting it back from their butcher by now....
a meal or two for you inconvenience, not to mention the months or years, you lost of you life due to the scare.... have a cook out.... (we need a grilling Smilie.....)
