Changed rear oil, still have a clunking
I had my mechanic drain the rear end and put new oil in as recommended in the owners manual. He didn't see a major amount of metal flakes or shavings, but the clunking noise is still there when I make tight turns. Now what? Any suggestions? It is a G80 rear as shown on the rpo codes.

G80 is the limited slip, right? Doesn't it need a special limited slip additive?

According to GM specs the G80 only uses gear oil, no additive.

G80 does not require the additive according to GM. Just because there are minimal or no filings doesn't mean the G80 is still good. I would look towards something else being the cause...When was the last time you changed the transfer case fluid? It requires the GM Auto-trac-2 fluid. If it has been 30k or more it definitely needs to be changed. The t-case could be binding up causing the rear to do weird things.

I used the part number in the owners manual, it said do not use additive. Also, I bought the van used a few months ago so I don't know when the transfer case fluid was changed. The van has 70K on it now.LiftedAWDAstro wrote:G80 does not require the additive according to GM. Just because there are minimal or no filings doesn't mean the G80 is still good.
