closed cell foam or modelling clay
anyone know where i can pick up either of these items in the vancouver area? as far as the clay goes...i'm talking about the one used to mock up cars and parts so would need more than what's available at the local hobby store. would probably prefer the foam for ease of cleaning.

Hey blk lt awd,
The clay you are looking for is called blue clay and they have been hitting a lot of it at the Golden Ears Bridge project. This clay is useless once excavated and you should have no problem getting some for free.
Also check out your local excavating companies as they may have or know where some is.

Re: closed cell foam or modelling clay
Are you speaking off this type of foam?
If so, that's the same type stuff they use on houses, I assume you could just get it at Home Depot or Lowe's
Here's another pic, you can see it's an Owens Corning product, shouldn't be too hard to get ahold of.

Just a thought, but what about Florist Foam? You know, that green stuff they use in floral displays?

Re: closed cell foam or modelling clay
Not sure if it is the exact type of foam you are looking for but I have a friend that works at Premdor in Yarrow & he has supplied me with alot of the foam that they use for insulating the doors that they make. I use it for insulation in the basement, treehouse, under the pool, etc. Comes in the handy 20" by 40" chunks & he says that they have alot of it there that they need to dispose of....

Re: closed cell foam or modelling clay
I'd second the pink foam from home depot for mock ups,
If you plan to glass over pink insulation be aware of resins, several types will burn it.
Ive had great sucess using thinned cold cure epoxy & pink insulation for making moulds.

Re: closed cell foam or modelling clay
james, that would be great....however i'm a little unsure of what foam is used inside doors...basically i can't use the stuff that looks like it's a bunch of small dots glued together and crumbles when shredded. i need more of the stuff that falls like dust when sanded.....somewhat like those pics posted. if that's what it is, i'd love some and very much appreciate your help!!!v8famvan wrote:Not sure if it is the exact type of foam you are looking for but I have a friend that works at Premdor in Yarrow & he has supplied me with alot of the foam that they use for insulating the doors that they make. i may have to go this route since there's less to worry about while using resin on clay. thanks for the info.

Re: closed cell foam or modelling clay
thanks so much for posting those pics....u know it didn't even cross my mind to go to home depot and take a gander.........it's so crazy it may just work, and obviously does......astronut74 wrote:Are you speaking off this type of foam?

and reaper, thanks for the heads up...i'm definitely going to be using resin/fiberglass over the mould i make. if using the pink stuff is the route i go i'll do some experimenting on a junk piece so what i make doesn't melt away.....
thanks for all the info guys.

Re: closed cell foam or modelling clay
You shouldn't have any problems using resin over the pink foam. The guy that built the car in the pics above used body filler to smooth the foam, the body filler is also polyester based, and would melt the styrofoam product you mentioned, but the pink foam is fine. other foams that should be fine to use would be the floral foam that Cap't mentioned, that spray foam "Great Stuff" is okay as well, although very messy. If you are ever uncertain if the foam is suitable to fiberglass over, you can coat it with a thick layer of latex house paint and allow it to dry to form a barrier- it has to be latex paint. It won't affect either the resin or the foam. Here's a few more pics of his build:thanks so much for posting those pics....u know it didn't even cross my mind to go to home depot and take a gander.........it's so crazy it may just work, and obviously does......

and the final product:
If you decide to check out fiberglassforums.com , the site I got these pictures from, the guy that did this build is "vraptor" It's been a while since he was on there though-- but there is a bunch of other good stuff on there.
