Anyone know a way to temporaily stop rust?
I have a patch of rust where the paint was scratched just above one of the wheel openings on the van. Needless to say in Ontario where the answer to snow is salt, that is a place where lots of salt spray goes. The temperature is too cold to paint it to try to slow it down, so does anyone know something I can do to stop the rust until spring when I can fix it properly?

Fluid Film! I use this stuff all over my snowplow and sprayed it all over the frame on my truck. I just found out about it this summer and bought a case of the aerosol cans and have used probably 9 cans already! This stuff goes on as a lanolin wax liquid and keeps moisture and salt and rust out. It really does provide a moisture barrier between bare metal and corrosion.
It is available at most John Deere dealers as well as online through places like McMaster-Carr.

Keeping a coat of Vaseline on it might help.
Can't get it inside anywhere for 6-8 hours just to touch it up?

Fluid Film looks like the answer. I have seen it, but never realized what it did. Now I can think of a bunch of applications including my snowblower.
As for getting it inside, not a chance. Right now it is so cold that trying to clean off the salt would result in the water freezing as it was sprayed on. My garage is not heated and would definitely not get it warm enough to paint. Maybe with a warm spell I could do it, but the shear amount of salt they are dumping on the roads right now because of all the snow coming through is making my van look more grayish white than bluish green.

How much does Fluid Film cost? I use Maxima Chain Wax but if Fluid Film is cheaper, and willing to give it a try

I don't know the cost right now. I looked in the Princess Auto online catalog and a spay can of it is $12.99. From the website of the company that makes Fluid Film, it also comes in larger sizes which I would guess are more affordable. It is sold at Napa, Car Quest, TSC, Canadian Tire, Princess Auto, Wal-mart and a bunch of other places. I will do some phoning around on Monday to see what I can find.

I order mine from McMaster-Carr. The part number is 12055K74 and the cost is around $4 a can plus shipping. I don't know if they will ship to Canada though.

Or you could move out here. We use sugar beet slurry to de-crud the roads.

Re: Anyone know a way to temporaily stop rust?
I'm in Southwestern Ontario. We get weather warm enough to melt the snow (at least in the sun) throughout the winter. If it would stay well below freezing constantly it would be less of a problem. I'm trying the fluid film. I might try it on the snow blower as well once I weld up the handle mount that broke today.
