Gear selector
I have a problem with the gear indicator in my guage cluster. You know the red box that lights up behind your gear. It acts very eratically. Sometimes there's no light at all, sometimes it flashes, and sometimes it lights up the wrong gear! Has anyone had this problem before?

Re: Gear selector
Two possibilities come to mind. Bad connection at the switch on the transmission and corrosion in the connector in the wiring behind the battery. On my '96 it was in the wiring connector behind the battery. I removed that connector and hard wired that harness.

Re: Gear selector
I have also heard that it could be the neutral safety switch connector on the transmission, so I am going to try that first. I'm not sure which connector behind the battery you're talking about though. Can you please provide some more information about that?

Re: Gear selector
On my '96 there is a major wiring connector (junction) right behind the battery. It's next to the firewall. It had a lot of corrosion I assume was caused by its being so close to the battery. I removed that connector and soldered all of the wires and insulated them with heat shrink. No more problems with the gear selector lights. I've never had any problems with the switch on the transmission.

Re: Gear selector
I have a 2002 Astro AWD. My gear selector started doing something similar. The selector works properly but the light doesn't always move with the selector. I have an auto lock/unlock feature tied to this light. So sometimes when I put it in park, the power locks do not activate. Would the wiring issues you discribed on a '96 be the same or similar to the '02?
