Need help to find another rear axle for my -89Astro

Post by NorwegianAstro »

Hi every one

I have a problem. I would like to put wider wheels on my -89 astro

Image
This is my Van

Image
Here are my wheels 15"x10"

I need a rear axle from a GM car with a V8 engine, 10bolt rear axle? That is shorter than the original Astro axle. Can any one help out to find a rear axle to my van? I want my wheels under the original fender...

Image
As you can see here, plenty of room on the inside...

Image
But the axle is too wide...

My axle are 149,7cm between brakedrums...

One problem you're going to run into is that the rear axle from the Astro/Safari is unique. The differential is offset making the axles a different length.

i simpler, cheaper, easier option would be to just flair the fenders a little more

An 89 Astro with steel leaf springs? Don't see that very often. There are a couple of issues. One that was already stated is that these vans have an offset diff with different sized axles. Second is that even if you did find one with shorter axles (doubtful) you don't have the room you think you have inside. You need to take in account of the tire itself which will probably hit the leaf springs and fender well. Not to mention the fab work you will need to do to any donor diff you may find in terms of spring and shock mounts. Peter has at least 10" rims on his van but his is lifted, has a custom made ford 9" rear and specific offset wheels.

Sorry, I don't have anything to add to the previous replies. But could you tell me what you did for your front end grille setup? I like the look!

Easiest thing would have been to order a set of rims with backspacing more suitable for your truck. Seems you're going about it the other way, trying to get the truuck to fit what you bought.
Having said that, I've got a custom Ford 9" which accomodates my custom 15" x 10" rims. I could check to see what the specs are on my custom rims. If you're interested, I could then send you the specs on my rear so you could order up the same thing. Pretty expensive though. I ordered the 9" rear because I needed something that would stand up to my big block engine. Seems like a lot of money just to fit your rims on the truck...
