Turbo Diesel 4Runner

Post by Someone »

Can I put a turbo diesel mercedes engine in my 1989 Toyota 4Runner?

who am I kidding of course I can :muhaha:

SPECS

1989 4Runner
SAS'd
Mercedes OM617.952 3.0L 5 Cylinder Turbo Diesel
125BHP / 170FtLbs
Toyota W56 5 spd Transmission and T-case

Drives Awsome... mind you I have put less than 20KM on it... the 4low is bad ass...

still have a few finishing touches... some exhaust that comes out near the back of the truck will be nice, and I need to get some new oil cooler lines made up... total cost so far under $500 bucks

Any Questions?

Very cool!

How is the engine adapted to the transmission?

(And how come you didn't toss it in an Astro! Somebody needs to get a diesel swap done and documented!) :muhaha:

I made an adapter plate from some steel plate, and had an aluminum bushing machined to center the flywheel and hold the pilot bearing...

the astro would not start yesterday, If I had another spare diesel I would start tomorrow...in fact, I do have a 12KV 4 cyl diesel generator, about 45hp... I could mount it in the engine bay and put electric motors at the wheels :yikes:

Awesome, bud! What's the torque/hp rating for that engine?

the motor is a 3L inline 5 cyl turbo and is rated at 125bhp and 170ftlbs... not a ton but more than the 4cyl gasser I pulled out.

to be honest for the price and availability of these old 300d benz's they would propably be a nice swap for the astro :poke:

very cool Tristan. what is that mb motor normally in, like a 230 or something?

is this a swap that has been done on 4runner forums or something or just come crazed idead you came up with 'just because' it was laying in your shop

i'd love an old 4runner like that ... problem is up here they're all rotten or sellers think they are worth way more than they are [-(

In my searches I found one guy who attempted the swap but never finished...

my gasser died, and the 300d was only 300 bucks... offroading season was a couple weeks away so I made it work..

4runners are overpriced, that is for sure, but mine is as rust free as it gets for a canadian truck, it still has most of its original paint, the exhaust now exits behind the firewall, I must have put 100Kms on it yesterday like that, I am going to bring it out infront of the rear wheel tommorow. Going offroding next weekend so it has to be ready for a 1000km round trip
