What to do with dead air compressor
Recently my Craftsman upright 30gal, 5hp, 110V air compressor motor took a dump. A new motor was going to be $250 or more. I got lucky and found a 3.2hp, 60 gal upright, 220V Campbell Hausfeld locally for $400. Now I am left wondering what to do with the old Craftsman unit. Should I still replace the motor and try to sell it to get the money out of the new motor. Or should I toss it? Or should I plumb the tank in line with my new compressor for some extra capacity????
Thoughts???

Re: What to do with dead air compressor
You just went from a 30 gal capacity to a 60.
What do you have going on that you would need to triple your original cap?
If you already have everything from the new unit installed & running...get what money you can from the old to offset the cost of the new.
Just my $.02

Re: What to do with dead air compressor
OK that seems sound advice.
I've no idea what to price it at. I'm guessing $35-$50. The thing was $300 or so many years ago. A new motor for it would be $250....
Sound reasonable?

I've been wanting to find a compressor with a dead motor to hook a bicycle up to and donate it to Ray's MTB Park. Just think a bicycle powered air compressor would be cool to fill bicycle tires with.

Re: What to do with dead air compressor
Are you sure that your motor took a dump? I picked up a used 60gal Craftsman Professional compressor at an estate sale for $50 and was told that the motor was toast. I took it home and found that one of the pistons crankshaft was broke (due to a nut that came loose). I rebuilt both cylinders for about $150 and put locktite on the nut that came loose. Still working like new.
If you motor is toast then I would suggest taking it to a local motor shop to get a quote to rebuild it. If the cost isn't too expensive then you have a working compressor that you can sell.

Re: What to do with dead air compressor
Oh... That's... that's just wrong on so many levels Peter....
The pump itself is spinning freely. The motor spins and starts to run...but after about 2-3 seconds it stops because the breaker trips. I have been told my an electrician/electric motor guy locally that the motor is toast when that happens. So i am quite certain the motor is the problem and the only way to fix it is a $250 motor, since it's a 5hp model.
I put it up on craigslist for $75 and I am including the regulator. That alone is about $50 for a new one.

Re: What to do with dead air compressor
Is that motor a capacitor start? If so, it is possible the capacitor is shot. That would make it a cheap fix.

Re: What to do with dead air compressor
Explain more please. It's starts. Runs about 2-3 seconds and then the breaker trips. I am told the high speed windings in the motor are bad.

Re: What to do with dead air compressor
If it starts ok, the cap. is ok. It does in fact sounds as though the windings are bad.

Re: What to do with dead air compressor
Here is a crazy thought. Make a big BBQ out of the tank. ALl you need is a way to cut the tank a little bit of steal and a welder. Great project and will last forever when you are done. I have done this before to a larger tank from a compressor and it made a great BBQ. Ok you won't make any money off of it but you may not any way, so strip it down and sell the compressopr part and use the tank for a great BBQ. Just a thought good luck what ever you do with it.
