something's just not right about this whole thing
My stepdaughter, a trainer for her high school athletic teams just called. All sporting events have been canceled until further notice in the state of Texas due to...wait for it....swine flu.
I took the death toll compared to the planets population and ran the numbers on my $5 calculator. The percentile is something like 9 zeros to the right of the decimal point. This whole thing is creeping me out. It's not the flu I'm worried about. It's my own government.

Re: something's just not right about this whole thing
The issue is not the death toll at this point, but the fact that it is the H1N1 virus, and it as a flu virus it can mutate very suddenly to become much more transmissible and virulent. At this point, outside of Mexico it has not been particularly deadly, but we also have absolutely no vaccine for it (six months to develop one), thus they want to limit transmission at this point. Unless there are actual active cases among the students in the school district, shutting down things is not helpful, but closing a school for a week if there is an active case (better to control the spread as much as we can) is not a bad idea. The real danger is if it goes dormant for the summer and then comes back in the fall much stronger. At this point I am not excessively concerned, but I understand the concerns of public health officials for unlike the bird flu, this one is spreading worldwide. As someone who watched SARS (another respiratory infection) cause no end of problems in Toronto including causing the deaths of medical personal because it was not taken seriously right away, I say I would rather have them be overly cautious a this point and then say they over reacted than treat it only based on early evidences of it not being to virulent, and then finding out it is much worse only when many people who could have been protected were not. Revelation predicted all this, but I guess I didn't really expect to see it in my time. It will only get worse too. "what is up will be down and what is down will be up. What is left will be right and what is right will be left"...

Re: something's just not right about this whole thing
exactly what jim said ....
further to that... the real concern is unlike 'normal' flu's or virus' that we need to be concerned for the elderly and children, those whos immune system can't defend. this could be one to worry about when all are at risk. our bodys fight off stuff everyday whether we feel sick or not.. when the 20'somethings - 40'somethings immune system can't defend, we may need to start worrying
just my 2 cents

I agree, something is not right with this deal.
I would write more on this subject and others but with everything thats happening at this point in time its probably not wise.
I will say that I belive the media is programming the general public and if you want actual news you wont find it on TV. true news is available on the net but I belive only for a limited time now.

Boy are you accurate about "news". It's just plain crazy how it's slanted, to the point of propaganda, no exaggeration.batmo wrote:I agree, something is not right with this deal.

Re: something's just not right about this whole thing
I won't argue about the news coverage, but they tend to put things in the most sensational manner they can. Does that mean the H1N1 flu is not something to be concerned about. No. However, the concern must be balanced. At this point it does not seem any more fatal than any other flu. The problem is it is a new variant, and that means there is little immunity carry over from previous flus. At the same time, it does not seem to spread particularly easily human to human. The danger and worry is that it may mutate to something that transmits easily human to human. Flu is not a particularly stable virus, never has been, that is why they need to produce new vaccines every year. The thing is the changes in known strains of flu are fairly predictable. This on is new, so we don't know exactly how it will change between now and next flu season. Right now the best response is reduce exposure, hence close places like schools where cases have been found, and basic hygiene, ie. wash your hands regularly, don't touch your nose, mouth or eyes, and the like. I don't think this is some big conspiracy, just something that the MSM wants to hype, which leads to people either over reacting or ignoring this.

the media runs the story 24/7, telling you how bad it is...then adds the line at the end saying not to panic...
