Air compressor R.I.P?!?!?!?!!?!?.........
so i think my compressors motor just kicked the bucket turned it on to pressurize got to 80psi and stopped ok i didn't think much of it touched the cover felt a bit warm at that point i started to get a bad feeling went to turn on the lights and nothing. It had blown the breaker plugged it out and turned it off went and reset the breaker turn lights on, plugged it back in still all good switched it on started for a second then sounded like it stuggled to turn the pump 3 times then stopped and buzzed then blew breaker again... turned it back off took the housing off and check for shorts and that pump was moving freely all seemed fine. Reset breaker again turned it back on and it did the same thing.
Is it safe to assume that my motor kicked the bucket?

Just had the same thing happen to mine earlier this year. The high speed windings in the motor is what I was told. Sorry Dude.

Re: Air compressor R.I.P?!?!?!?!!?!?.........
i'm going to put it back together and take it to ingersoll-rand on monday (hopefully) and see what they say looks like a motor to match the one that's in there is roughly $300 and a new compressor to match the one i have is $500

I was referring to the air compressor for my air tools not AC but depending on the tool the dryer statement is still true i'm going to go lurk the local sites to see if they have ones one there close i found a 27 gallon for $300 so far tempted to go get it since it's larger then mine but not in the same city as me

Re: Air compressor R.I.P?!?!?!?!!?!?.........
i went and bought the $300 27 gallon compressor, it's larger but has a slightly lower flow rate then my old one. When i start a job i tend to want to get it over with asap so i want out in a hurry to get a new one. not sure what i'm going to do with my old one but i'll keep it for now maybe see if i can get it working or just hook it up to my new one so i'll have a 47 gallon twin tank system. Also noticed two bulges in my air hose just now so i'm done working for the night going to grab a new hose tomorrow at work. I still feel like i wasted the weekend though but not much i can do about that now.....

Re: Air compressor R.I.P?!?!?!?!!?!?.........
Keep the old compressor. They are simple to repair, there is really not much to them. Is this an oil-less type compressor? If so, it's even easier to repair.
I was given an old 25 gallon shop compressor years ago. that thing was crap. Connecting rod bent, piston broken and the cylinder was scored. I got all the replacement parts for fairly cheap at the local Sears repair facility. The thing works great now.
Obviously if it's the electric motor, that'll be a bit more costly, but should still be cheaper than a new unit. But I guess I'm just stubborn.. I'll keep something forever as long as it's repairable!!

Re: Air compressor R.I.P?!?!?!?!!?!?.........
Mine was a Craftsman and was almost 15 years old when it died. The motor alone was a $250 part from Sears. I sold the old one for $75 via Craigslist. You might think about doing that to recoup some of the money you spent on the new one.

Re: Air compressor R.I.P?!?!?!?!!?!?.........
My Craftsman compressor started doing the same thing as yours about a year ago. On the side of the electric motor there is a large "Startup Capacitor" (I think that's what it was called.). Anyway the capacitor had failed and it would blow the circuit breaker when I turned it on. New capacitor and all is well.
I know it's a little late, but I hope it helps!
