Trials of finding a rental garage

Post by 1Gary »

I have been looking in the Roch,NY area for a garage I could rent to work on my 1985 Astro Ole Yellar High top project over the winter. In fact I have been looking at ad's in Craig's list for over 2 months.

The first advise I wanted to pass along is I think it is a bad decision to take on a project like this without a garage and be renting a home that isn't friendly to that kind of work in a driveway.

Second, the factor of wanted to do a 3" lift on a high top van to discover most home garages are a 8' or less door opening.I did think of lowering the van by having it on rims only like Chops did,but I don't think it would be enough after a 3" lift.So if anyone is considering building a high top van, don't forget the housing issues it presents. #-o This leads to commercial space only which is very expensive by the foot.Even pole barns around here are very costly to rent.

I am going to look at another rental garage tomorrow and hope I can use the space.Hoping garage door opening 10' or taller.(the owner didn't know for sure)It has gas and electric separate with a bathroom and is priced within my budget.

Other than the local paper and Criag's list which I am actively watching,if anyone one of you guys have a suggestion where else to look, please help.

I am getting desperate getting closer to the winter season again.

Thank You in advance,

Gary

Gary, How about a rental facility. One local to me has 10 by 20 foot bays, and costs about 120.00 a month. Just a thought, Jim

Oh, and by the way. What kind of mods do you have planned?

Yeah Jim,most the storage places around here won't let you work on anything and as I said, they have too only 8' tall doors.

The mod's are in part in these threads:

Welcome back Gary!

I see you have been watching Craigslist, but have you placed an ad asking for the type of building you are interested in? Somebody might have the space and never thought about renting it out. Just a thought.

Thanks Matt.I have never placed a ad in Craigs list before.Got any idea what it costs??.Guess I could just ask them, but I thought you might have some experience with ads from them.

Thank You Darren.

The update:

Well I am going to look at the garage I spoke about tomorrow night.I am finding it is rare to find a garage that has a door tall enough to fit Ole Yellar after a 3" lift and the high top and a landlord willing to allow me to work on the van too.It is kind of a pita because it is so far away from where I live, but as I said worth the travel time.In fact it is towards Dean and Lynne's place on Canadaigua Rd which is off 350 that runs off 104.

If I can work out the details and it looks like a safe workable space,I'll take the camera with me and post some pic's.

Took a ride out to see it and the landlord had to cancel our appointment. So I didn't take any pictures yet.Look very promising and I am excited to close this deal to rent it.The door is 8' wide and as he said a 9' tall door. The bay is next to another closed off from the other side which is being used by some guys who paint cars. Now once I have the rust work done on Ole Yellar-wouldn't that be handy to have them paint it.It is a commercial building so no one would bother me about the work I am doing.

The bay it's self is 12'x24' deep.Man I hope my luck don't run out as it has in the past looking for a shop.Left another msg with the landlord once I got back to try to give him rent and get keys, sign a lease.

Need for you guys to keep your fingers crossed for this old boy to finally get a break.Got those wrenching juices flowing hot, hot, hot.

It is kind of why I was so frantically looking for a shop. The rocker panels where getting so bad, that if it went threw another winter,I was afraid I was going to lose my beloved Ole Yellar van.So once I start on it,the body work will come first.
