A cherry picker
A cherry picker
While I am shopping for a cherry picker,I would think I need a 2 ton one because of the fact I am going to lift the body off the sub frame.
Any comments??.

Re: A cherry picker
A 2-ton is what I bought. It worked fine for lifting the body up high enough to slip the subframe out.

Re: A cherry picker
2-ton, no question. The next one I buy will fold, and I really want one of those I beams on the A frames (Harbor Freight calls if a gantry crane, but it isn't)...hold on, scratch that, I want a 2 post lift hydraulic....
Yes a 2 ton will do, lol. Harbor freight did have one on sale for $179.99; $189.99 for a folding one.

Re: A cherry picker
I am borrowing my buddy's and it has removeable legs. Works well, I think it'd do better than using a lift to pull an engine out for the reason that quite honestly I had to maneuver it around a lot to get my engine out/in/etc.
Re: A cherry picker
So if I got a deal working on a engine stand and cherry picker that is only a 1 ton but the legs fold up,would that be too light to lift the van off the sub frame???.Maybe I could buy a different ram for it to up grade it to a 2 ton??. :-k :-k

Re: A cherry picker
Ram isn't the problem, the 1 ton I saw was all together smaller, and wouldn't be able to lift as high. Remember also, the weight rating is with the boom and legs all the way retracted, I have never used mine this way, only fully extended. Lifts higher and has more reach. Who needs to lift 4000 lbs anyway?
I think the 1 ton could lift it weight wise, it's the reach I'd be worried about.

Re: A cherry picker
Well I made the deal today and brought it back to the garage.A one ton fold able leg cherry picker that looks new,750 lb four wheel engine stand in good shape, and a never used load leveler in the box.All for $130.00 bucks.Pretty good deal I think.Aleast now I can move the engine into the stand to continue to tear it down.Want to take that to the machine shop as a short block along with the crank,rod/piston assemblies.
Still not that I want to do it this way,I might just end up just taking out the engine/tranny at first so I can still roll the van around while I build up the donor sub frame,V8 and tranny.
I might just rent a A-Frame & chain fall to lift the van once I remove Ole Yellar's sub frame.Seems to me without the cherry picker in the way,to roll the sub frame out the front would be easier and you could lift the van as high as you want with that.

Re: A cherry picker
This deal just got alittle sweeter.I hate those load levelers.I had one when I had my shop and all it did was scare up my freshly painted firewall. From what I could figure out,the only use would be on a rear engine dragster and maybe, just maybe a open car like a roadster.
So I took back the load leveler and got back cash a little over $30.00 bucks That means I got the cherry picker and engine stand for $100.00 bucks.Sweet!!!.
