I'm sure that the hatch will open on my 99 when it is running, as long as you don't have the doors locked.

Ok, I took my lovely assistant out and tried it, key in, out, running, as long as it isn't locked, the hatch pops. I don't have auto locks, but they are power.
I do think it is cool that the keyswitch in the hatch locks/unlocks all the doors. So does the lock button just inside the hatch.
Mine is a conversion, not stock GM. Maybe that's why.

I know the hatch on my 99 won't unlock if only the drivers side door is unlocked. it will if all doors are unlocked. maybe check that Scott.
