two stage 60 gal compressors

Post by 1Gary »

Ok this one some of you can call me old school.I have always had the old type of two stage compressor and never owned a oil less two stage one.Somehow I came to the idea the oil less ones where not as good or as powerful. The craftsman ones look cheesy.I am going to be shopping of a used one in the coming wks.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of each??.I figured out the oil less in terms of the air line part.

really depends on the useage.
For a quick tire fill, or some trim work around the house I use my little 3gal pancake oil-less air compressor.
Anything that needs dedicated air like hand tools where the pump will be running more often then the units with sep motor and oiled pump head will last longer and be easier on the ears ( I have to wear earplugs with my pancake compressor ). Typically the oilesss units are a consolidated unit and not servicable either. My old 25 gal compressor has had both the pump head and motor replaced in the almost 20 years I have used it and I bought it used to begin with.

Curious but why do you mention a 2 stage compressor ? Do you need the higher PSI ?

In my old shop 15yrs ago I went threw changing 4 compressors until I did get a 60 gal two stage which did overall do the job I wanted.By buy all the other ones,it cost me more than if i have bought the 60 gal two stage in the first place which I traded off once I moved out of the old shop. The main reason was CFM or volume that the others lacked. So it is kind of why I posted this thread.I don't want to make the same mistake this time and I truly don't know much about the oil less stuff.

i don't know much about compressors so this look like and interesting thread i have 2 oil-less compressors both are loud the newer one is even louder then the old one and neither has the capacity to run a air-drill continuously so i'll be looking for a bigger badder one in the next year or two for the same reason you want the 60G 2-stage

I actually looked at a 30gal two stage, but I don't want to fall into the same bad decision trap I did before. If you want at some point do body work with a board sander say, they do require a fair amount of CFM.Same for a air supply of a sand blaster. For me to have the extra capacity wither it be with a oil less or regular compressor is worth used paying around here a extra $100 or $150 for it.

It really is a matter of RPM's the compressor spins at. The oil-less ones generally spin at 3600 since they are direct drive. The standard compressors that are pulley driven are going to last longer since they are driven at a much lower RPM. This makes them much quieter as well. My Craftsman 30 gallon upright oil free is so loud, you need ear muffs to work a drill or die grinder.

Two stage actually refers to compressors that have two stages of compression. It compresses the air a bit on one stage, and them pumps that compressed air into another compression cycle. They are quieter by far.

You are talking about "all-in-one" compressors, direct drive oilless. They tend to be noisy as hell and slow to pump up, and dont last nearly as long as a belt drive unit.

I have a single stage belt drive unit, 60 gallon tank. Fairly quiet, a two stage would be a bit quieter. Alot (if not all) of the direct drive all in one units use teflon rings too which eventually burn up.

Well looks like the type I was thinking of,belt driven two stage,is what I am looking for on Craigslist. For me,the horizontal tank ones drain the water better over the vertical ones.15yrs ago in the old shop I owned a 120gal vertical tank single stage that I even shimmed towards the drain valve and I could never get out of it as much water as the horizontal ones.

If I remember right, the pump speed on the belt driven ones is 1325.
