Some of the LS1 guys are going a LOT wilder than that I've been hearing 235@.050 is pretty common now. Then again they are looking to do a LOT different things than you are. I'd be looking at 210-215@.050 just for drivability and MPG and that's probably on the high order.

Kind of a interesting company.I can't afford it all at one time.I need your opinion on this link and then I could contact them to see if I could buy component pc's to end up with their set-up.

Please look into the side bar topics on the site that explains how and why:

Thanks Mark.I thought the guy there was Brian.I have that company booked marked from before and haven't got around to calling him.I'll do that next wk and post what he said about my build and about 383's in general. They are different.

Ya know yrs ago at a NECO long before Ole Yellar, the V8 donor van,I had just the 94LT,we had a set down open discussion about a project van for me.It was on Peter's camp site.Lockdoc<seems to be MIA for the most part>told me after he had done his second V8 swap to just get a V8 350,reseal it and swap it into a project van.In other words keep it simple. That would be more than enough for what I wanted to use it for.I do remember words of wisdom from over the yrs and reflect back to them now knowing more what the logic was for them.I am committed to this 383 and will do anything within my power to maximize it's potential. But in the same hand had I listened to Bill,I would likely be driving the van by now.

Well two cams being considered are Ersons

One is 218/226@.050 with a lift of 480/480 1.5.1 rockers Lct 108 part#E11980.RPM range 2200-5200

The other is 226/234@.050 with a lift of 546/540 1.5.1 rockers Lct 112
part #E119847.RPM range 2500-5500

I know the OEM lifters and retainers are very limited in the RPM safe operation.I would limit that to 5000 more than likely 4500.

But as I have said on the EFI thread,it becomes a question of if I work towards building this with a cam that dictates what I need for a EFI or I scale the cam to the EFI.

It may be best to find a custom grinder and set something speced out from them. Little more $ but not terribly so. I like that 218/226 grind, what's the LSA on it? If it's 112-114 it'd probably be a good all around cam for a 383 that would drive damn near stock and be fairly easily tuned with EFI. I was thinking about going crazier than that eventually with my 305, but I don't intend on towing with it either. :)

In a lot of ways I agree with that sentiment though, but I will say this; If you decide to do something don't make a thousand major changes after you've committed to the parts it will cost more in the long run. I've changed a few times now and every time I do I have to sell some of the parts and get different ones. I usually come pretty close to breaking even though admittedly. The closer to stock you keep the swap the easier it is; Since mine is fairly far out there are a lot of complications.

The two or three biggest mistakes I've made so far were to use old heads, not get a set of accessory brackets from ONE engine and not to use a set of TPI brackets with my TPI intake. The TBI builds are a lot more tolerant on accessory brackets but when you have to worry about the Throttle body hitting everything it just sucks. But I'm not in a hurry and this is for my enjoyment/education, so whatever on that front.

Ersons was in the running for a custom grind, but from a second source I was told that unless they have a blank and a ref file they don't do that any longer.I got to call them to clear that up.

There are a few companies that do custom grinds, not just Erson. I'd check Bullet or Cam Motion as well. They are big in the turbo communities but should be able to give you something interesting. I'd put off on the rest until you got the cam though just in case it's small base circle.

I am about two to three wks out from a completed short block needing a cam.Given the stroker profiled rods I am getting and the peanut cam,I wouldn't think a small base circle would come into play.Certainly we will check that.

I got my 3.75 Howards Track Smart 4340 crankshaft today.Certainly a major step towards one of the building blocks for a rotating assembly.I am very proud/excited to have gotten this pc.It is way more than I will ever use and fills the main theme of over building for durability.
